I am having trouble finding an SVHS VCR to buy. I simply want to find one and buy it! It should be prosumer to pro and new not used. The only one I can find is the JVC V101US and according to this site there are problems. I have searched B&H J&R JVC SONY PANASONIC. I presently have 2 Panasonic AG1960's in my home studio bought new 10 years ago and still going strong but need a new 3rd deck for a back up on location shoots (shooting depositions). Help! Thank you Thank you Thank you.

Panasonic SVHS/VHS Analog VTRs & Players
Note - Professional VHS Duplication equipment is no longer manufactured. The AG-DS850H was discontinued July 19, 2001. The AG-5710 was also discontinued with no replacement. The AG-DS545, AG-7350, AG-7350E (PAL), AG-7150, and AG-1980 were discontinued with no replacement models. The AG-DS555 was brought back in April 2003 due to customer demand and the limited availability of parts to build the AG7350 series, but was discontinued with no replacement model. The replacement for the AG-1340 was the AG-1350, but it, along with other models, such as the AG-2580, AG-3200, and AG-W3 were in limited production as of January 2005, and then discontinued with no replacement models. The exception is currently the AG-VP320 combo unit, which replaced the AG-VP310 as noted below.
Panasonic AG-VP320 combo unit (pretty cheap and not really true svhs)

JVC still has their pro line of svhs units - like the JVC SR365

or the JVC SR-VS30U Mini-DV/S-VHS VCR with MiniDVCAM Playback

i guess the question would be -- why not shoot to dv instead ? or something with real time code -

I agree with you BJ_M but unfortunately my customers ask for SVHS and VHS masters regardless of what format I shoot in, and they must be available at the end of the day. I would have to run home and make a copy anyway so I'd rather do it on the spot. Strange but true. So as you can see I need a vcr that records in SVHS/VHS and I really don't want to keep lugging around my antique AG1960.

lordsmurf's right -- i would take any day a refurbished panasonic heavy duty pro PORTABLE recorder -
they were built like tanks and if it has low hours (not a rental unit) and been overhauled -- would make a better choice than a studio type deck - which are not to good moving around a lot"Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
They're not really "masters" if they're copies. I'd still agree to shoot DV, and then is some old-fashioned hard-head insists on S-VHS or VHS "masters", then make him a copy. There are a number of nice JVC pro decks that can do DV, DVD and S-VHS (in various combinations, depends on model). The JVC pro decks are not bad by any means. www.bhphotovideo.com

not much help but I have 2 JVC HR-S7500's (one upstairs and one downstairs) that have served me well over the years
. Taping stuff from the TV onto a S-VHS tape gave better quality and it was worth the few extra £'s

Seriously, you can find some classic bargains on eBay, wherever you are! Just keep looking. I've picked up a Panasonic TBC/DNR VHS, and a Electronic-Design TBC Enhancer, both for next-to-nothing and in perfect working order. Sometimes items like this are hidden (clueless sellers ha ha). Sometimes it pays to search by brand (eg Panasonic) rather than object (eg VCR). Cheers!

Sometimes Local VCR Repair shop have models that were fix & someone didn't pick them up for sale. I got my Panny AG-1980 that way, costing me only $90.00. Give it a try....

I'm in exactly the same predicament.
I need a S.VHS, & a Hi8 VCR.
ANY ideas where?
New or 2nd hand.
Easier in the US I guess. I'm in Africa. Can arrange to get stuff here. -
Is that NTSC or PAL where you are ? If the latter, a source in the U.K. might be your best bet. (Someone here will know about that . . . . ) I have no familiarity with Hi-8 format, but a good U.S. source for SVHS (such as Pan 1980) is Southern Advantage, which you'll find as a regular dealer presence on eBay.
When in Las Vegas, don't miss the Pinball Hall of Fame Museum http://www.pinballmuseum.org/ -- with over 150 tables from 6+ decades of this quintessentially American art form. -
Thanks very much Seeker.
I shoot on NTSC now, bu the rein Africa it's all Pal.
Good advice. Thanks.
