Hi, I've got and avi res: 608x288 and want to encide to dvd or mpeg which i'll author later but when i select auto dvd source 1:1 dest 16:9 then mpeg (avcodec) and ac3 audio it comes out like a 4:3 so then i use video filters resize 720,576 PAL but then i figured the aspect looks shit so I changeed to 720,340 and added 118 blackborders top and bottom and it won't let me save the automation settings make it look terrible so
How Does Resize and Add Balck Borders Work? any suggestions welcome .

Open the file in AVI Demux, change the video mode from copy to DVD (mpeg-2), then click on Video _> Filters and add the Add Black Borders filters. Fill in the numbers, and save a new video. AVI Demux will not author a DVD for you though, only encode the video and audio. You will have to author with an authoring tool to get a DVD structure ready for burning. If you don't have one, try GUIforDVDAuthor or DVD Styler

Add a resize filter first. Resize to 720 x 544 (16:9) or 720 x 416 (4:3), then add borders to fill them out.

Maybe you'll have to add a little bit of black letterboxing, as that ratio is 1.9:1. Originally, in the earlier post you mentioned 608x288 which, at 2.11:1, is a very unusual if not impossible aspect ratio if done correctly. 1.9:1 could result from a 1.85:1 movie cropped and resized for mod16. Doing a straight resize to 720x576 will turn out a lot better than will your screwy idea of "128 black border lines on top and bottom". I usually do these things using FitCD which says (one way of doing it anyway) for a 608x320 AVI source to be encoded for 16:9 PAL DVD:

    LanczosResize(720,544)
    AddBorders(0,16,0,16)

That says to resize it to 720x544 and then add 16 rows of pixels to both top and bottom. It'll looked stretched at 720x576, with people looking too tall and thin, but after encoding for 16:9 at playback it'll be resized and look just fine. If you don't understand how it can ever look 'normal', then you had better read up on Display Aspect Ratios. Here's one article:

guns1inger beat me to it. But since I took so much time to write it out, I'll post also.

  9. I already said that I use FitCD for the job. You could come here to be told how to do every single one, or you could learn how to do it yourself. And I'd bet some of the AVIs you have were made by idiots that didn't know how to resize properly. I'd suspect the 720x272 and 608x288 ones as having bad aspect ratios to begin with.

If your specs are right then you have a very old, slow, computer which limits your options for fast encodes. On a faster computer, AVStoDVD would take care of all of this for you. DVD Flick uses ffmpeg for encoding, which is faster, so you could give that a go.

Failing that, use something like FitCD (as suggested by Manono) or a similar calculator to work out what you have to resize to, and do it manually.

I would send you the one I wrote, but it requires dot.net, and if you are still running XP SP1 then you probably can't run it.

If you learn AVISynth Scripting, probably you will not need any editors any more!
