    Occasionally I get an AVI file that has the black bars on each side of the video. About an inch's worth, in Windows Media Player terms. I was instructed by a moderator on here to run it through AVIdemux and that would allow me to crop it to my liking.

    I've done that with many files and they've turned out great, but occasionally I get a file that does not respond to the editing, and after the procedure still remains the same, with the bars on each side. Are some files just unchangeable?

    Just to double-check, here are the steps I am using when attempting this procedure. I click on the open folder and load my file. Then it usually says it has detected a bitstream and asks me if I want to unpack it, (What's that about anyway?)Ithen check ok.

    Next in the Video option I click on the drop-down menu and choose MPEG-4 ASP (XVID-4). Then I choose filter and crop, set my borders the way I want them, then click apply and save, then save, once more with the file spelled out and the .avi included. Then my conversion starts.

    Is that all about right?

    Windows Media Player is not a great player, and not to be trusted.

    If you open the cropped file in AVIDemux, and the borders are gone, then the process has worked, and it is WMP that is adding the bars at playback.

    Personally, I use The KM Player and Media Player Classic Home Cinema because WMP is, frankly, rubbish.

    Thanks for your reply,

    So your saying that it "did the job" but WMP just didn't show the results? That makes sense, but how come sometimes I can see the difference in WMP? Is it just that WMP lacks consistency?

    I checked out both KM Player and Media Player Classic Home. Do you run both of them? I think I will try them. Does either playback DVD's?[/u]

    Both play back DVDs.

    MPCHC is nice because it is a single file, no install necessary, program. I have a copy on a USB key, and can use it anywhere.

    The KM Player is heavier, but far better than WMP, and has most codecs needed to play back most formats included, so it can play pretty much anything.

    Consistency is just one of WMP's many problems.

    Just got Media Player extracted to a folder and will soon tryout KM too. One quick question...I jumped right in and started my resizing of the original avi that I mentioned in my first post. I was all set to use the crop feature when I noticed that there are two other interesting options, MPlayer Resize, which says "Change image size. Faster than AVIsynth's resize and just plain "Resize"

    Might either of those two options also be necessary or work in place of what it is I want to do with my AVI, which is getting rid of the black bars on the side and re-doing the video so it just has a little black on both the bottom and the top, sort of like a Pan And Scan? Or should I just keep doing things like I started?

    Also...AVISynth has a resize? I have AVISynth but only from installing AVIRecomp. But there's no executable AVIsynth program that I can see.

    One more teeny question...Your thoughts on VLC Media Player. About all I know is that it plays DVD's

    Avisynth is script driven. You create a text file with the extension .avs, and type the commands into it. Check avisynth.org for details and examples. It seems daunting at first, but is extremely powerful once you get used to it.

    What about those two other options in AVIdemux that I mentioned, MPlayer Resize and "Resize". Would either of them get greater results in cropping a video the way I wanted or should I just continue to use the procedure that I mentioned in my first post?

    I don't know why you would want to resize after cropping, unless you were going to convert to DVD. Otherwise there is little to be gained.

    You misunderstand! It,s not that I want to resize after cropping at all. It's just that I'm not that familiar with AVIdemux other than the procedure I was told to you to get rid of the black bars on each side. That's the procedure that I describe in detail in my first post.

    Since I was having difficulty getting my crop to work before I posted my first thread, even after going through the proper steps, and even though I am aware now that WMP may be the culprit, I just wondered, if I run into the same problem, if I could try either of those other two functions I mentioned. I've never really used them before and don't know how they are different than cropping.

  11. If the aspect ratio of the video doesn't match the aspect ratio of your monitor you should get black bars during full screen playback. This normal and proper behavior.

    I'm having a problem in filtering .No matter what i do the file show the same .I have tried chopping up the border of the video and after i save it there is no change so i play that chopped file with avidemux and there no change of the video file so to make sure that there is no flaw i tried to mess up the video file like changing color and cutting but there is still no changes .Here is what i do first i open the vob file and choose the video format to mpeg asp and then click the video filter on video option bar and then i chop the file the way i wanted then i click apply and then click close button and then saved the file as vob and there is no single effect on the video.I'm sure there is no flaw but i think i miss a step . so if there is any video or screen shot guide i would be glad

    Have you changed the display in AVIDemux to show you the output instead of the input ? Unlike Virtualdub, AVI Demux only has a single display, and shows the input by default. You wont see the effect of filters in the preview window until you change it to show the output.

    Selecting MPEG-4 ASP in AviDemux doesn't give you a VOB. It creates an AVI file.

    THANKS for the reply and the advice but it doesn't work.It is true that the file show the any effect i put on but the saved file doesn't change.In this case i try with an avi format video and it still the same(I choose the video option as avi ).In fact I am not much of a programmer so it would be pretty much help full if you give me a specific step by step guide line . What i want to do is to chop the black border of a dvd video file.

  16. AviDemux:

    1) File -> Open
    2) Video -> MPEG 4 ASP (xvid)
    3) Configure... Encode Mode -> Constant Quantizer, Qauntizer -> 4
    4) Filters -> Transform -> Crop... as necessary
    5) File -> Save -> Save Video

    Works every time. Do not set Video to Copy.
