Probably LG models do. They are really good at playing various media types. Sony is probably the worst at this kind of thing with many of their models unable to do it at all. Be careful as some players will play these files from USB attached media and others only use the USB port for firmware updates and can't play media at all through it. And if you are planning on using an external disk drive, having that drive in an enclosure with its own power supply is a great way to eliminate potential problems as most DVD/BD player USB ports only put out very low power.

By the way, if you have high definition Divx/AVI files, some BluRay players have been reported to not work with those, although they will play standard definition Divx/AVI files. Definitely start looking at LG models first for your needs. And if you care anything at all about region free playback, do note that most BluRay players sold in the USA/Canada CANNOT be made region free, not even for DVD playback.

My sony bdp-s380 plays sd xvid and hd xvid from the usb and dvd/blu-ray discs and plays pal mkv and xvid in data mode.

No reason to re-encode xvid to mpeg unless you want fancy menus in a dvd-video.

Not sure what will play divx but its very easy just to change the divx to xvid with the 4cc changer that you can download if you don't have the xvid codecs which comes with the cc changer.
