  1. I am new to this forum and also a a newbie/rookie in creating wmv's or avi's.

My project is to take some new DVD's that were burned from transfering the VHS tape to DVD burner. The VHS tapes are my original recordings from my RCA VHS camcorder.

My 1st trial on my laptop/Windows/Vista, using a free version of WINX DVD burner applic., produced good audio, but the picture resolution is grainy, pixelated, small little boxes with vertical & horizonal lines. Just a poor video playback, compared to the original content. (Super HQ Master Tape, taped on the 2 Hr. mode.)

I didn't make any changes to the settings as I didn't know what to change, so I went with the default settings. (Used this WINX-DVD Ripper for lack of better application & unaware of other applications.)

1.) How do I improve video resolution on this this WINX DVD ripper?
2.) Or, what program do I use instead of above? I am trying to use free applications.
3.) I then want to break up the .wmnv (or .avi, or .flv??) and file share with friends from a file sharing site.
4.) I am thinking of trying new software and trial #2 of this project on my Gateway PC that runs XP, with mucho memory, & dual core processor instead of using applics. on the Gateway laptop.

Can you point me in the right direction & Thank You!

There is so much wrong with what you're doing that it's hard to know where to start. First question: are you simply trying to make a DVD copy of something that is already on DVD? If so, all you need to do is copy the disc contents onto your hard drive, then burn to a new disc with Imgburn.

There is no need for conversion to .wmv, .avi or .flv. In fact, NONE of those are DVD-compliant video formats. Your DVD should have a VIDEO_TS folder, containing a series of .vob (MPEG-2 based) files, with assoicated .ifo and .bup files. Burn that folder to a new disc with Imgburn.

If you need a ripper, there are some much better ones than the crapware you're using. DVD Decrypter is good, unless the disc has recent copy protection. (But if it comes from VHS transfers, there shouldn't be a problem.)

  3. filmboss80,

No I am not trying to copy the DVD, I have that capability. I am just looking on how to pip the perosnal DVD's & create movies of some type, avi, wmv, flc...

What software would I use & how to correct the resolution problem is what I am trying to do.

    Thanks again.

Don't use winx crap. Try autogk or handbrake and make an avi or mp4. If you don't need to shrink use vob2mpg and make a mpg, no reconversion.

Yeah, if I had actually read your post more carefully (instead of scanned it), I wouldn't have made such a bass-akwards interpretation. (Although I still assert that the tools you were using are crap.) Follow Baldrick's advice. I'd go with xvid .avi at a high quality bitrate setting. Otherwise, you may still be frustrated with the results. You are re-encoding after all.
