Hi. Is there a way to embed subtitles on certain parts of a video, then reencode only those parts, eg. function "smarrt rendering" in VDub?

Yes, there are probably a number of ways to do it. It does depend on what type of video codec you are working with, but if you have MPEG2 (or H.264 with newest version) you could use VideoRedo to cut out the portions that you want to embed subtitles into and re-encode those portions (using avisynth + Hcenc/x264 for instance). Then merge them back together in VideoRedo.
