We just used WinX ripper , the freeware version. I think it had a few bugs in because it didn't capture the last few seconds and the audio is just out of sync a little with the video.
Do you have any recommendations for a good DVD ripper? Something that rips to AVI or WMV.
Freeware would be nice, but I don't mind paying some money, (not more that $50.)

A "rip" is an exact copy of a DVD or Blu Ray disc.
Use DVDFabDecrypter(there is a free portion of the program) or something like AnyDVD to "rip" the DVD to your hard drive...then convert it to divx, xvid, H264....whatever you want. -
If you must convert directly from the DVD then you have to have AnyDVD or DVD Fab Passkey running in the background, then use something like AutoGK or Winff or Xvid4psp to do the conversion. Personally, I would rip the disc to your HDD and convert from there, as suggest by Hech54.
