    I am having some unusual problems with the audio on my WINXP SP2 Machine.

    The following things are confusing me:

    Online videos will not play sound

    In windows CONTROL PANEL - SOUND AND AUDIO DEVICES - SOUNDS (the grey button that is used to test a sound is grey and not working)

    The liitle windows speaker that is normally in the corner of the toolbar near the clock is not visible (even though i have ticked it to be there).

    Windows mediaplayer still plays music, and other appa that need sound still play sound.

    Start > Run > Regedit

    Come down to the following registry entries one at a time

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\drivers.desc

    Check the following keys exist

    "midimap.dll"="midimap.dll"
    "mciwave.dll"="mciwave.dll"

    Next and just below

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32]

    "midimapper"="midimap.dll"
    "wavemapper"="msacm32.drv"
    "wave"="wdmaud.drv"
    "midi"="wdmaud.drv"
    "mixer"="wdmaud.drv"

    Make sure these key values exist ... once added, reboot system ... tray icon will re-appear after and the shutdown sound will be heard during the shutdown.

    If any values "name" should contain a 1 at the end ... delete them ... the system won't recognize those

    Thx for the reply

    for the first location i have

    This key is missing
    "midimap.dll"="midimap.dll"

    This is present
    "mciwave.dll"="mciwave.dll"

    I am confused about what to do next.

    When i look at regedit for mciwave.dll i see

    NAME
    mciwave.dll

    TYPE
    REG_SZ

    DATA
    (MCI) Sound

    When i double click mciwave.dll, i see

    VALUE NAME
    mciwave.dll

    VALUE DATA
    (MCI) Sound
