I lost audio for mp3's, .avi, mpg files, and Audio Switcher::Out

Since Christmas Eve night, I had no audio. I checked all the usual things . . . it wasn't on mute, it didn't have a yellow question mark in Device Manager, system sounds wouldn't play, etc. I uninstalled the driver and codecs and reinstalled them, ran several anti-virus/trojan/malware programs, in Safe Mode and regular mode, but the scans came up with nothing. I also changed CSDVersion Value in the registry to 0. My mp3s won't play either.

Today, while I've been trying to see if I could fix it again, I get the message that's shown in the attachment. When I close the attachment, the video will then play but there's still no audio.

Please help. I have 11 ext hdds with videos on them!

I just went into Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices and the screenshot shows that I have no audio devices. I have a speaker system connected to my computer and I just removed all the connections and reconnected them. Does anyone have any idea what this means?

Look in 'Add and remove programs' in your control panel and see if your audio drivers are present. If your audio is on the motherboard, try downloading the drivers from the motherboard manufacturer and re-installing them. Uninstall the old ones first.

Yes, it shows that Realtek High Definition Audio Driver is installed. Yesterday, I uninstalled it and used my mobo disk to reinstall it. It didn't help. Since it's an older version, I uninstalled it and reinstalled the updated driver.

I also just installed Realtek AC97 audio driver package 4.06 WDM_A406 but it didn't help.

Could the lack of a codec cause this? According to G-Spot, I have 184 codecs loaded. I stayed away from codec packs, except for ffdshow, if that's a codec pack, and I manually loaded

I unplugged my new speakers and plugged in my old speakers in case it was the speakers that weren't working, but I had no audio with my old speakers either.

Just on a chance that it might have helped, I installed a codec pack *eek - I know*. At first, when I double clicked on video files, I didn't get the pn failure error message. After I opened about 6 of them, I started to get the message again. I opened the ones that didn't give me the pin error message the first time I opened them, but I got the message the second time I opened them. There was no audio.

Could it be possible that the port for my speakers went bad?

That's a unfortunate possibility. The only easy way to confirm this, AFAIK, is to add a PCI audio card.
