I recently got a new Canon hfr10 camcorder and I've shot a video and I'm not sure what preset to use in Adobe Premiere.

The video's size is 1920x1080 and it was shot in 60i.

None of the AVCHD presets in Premiere have 60i. They just say 29.97 fps...

I'm not sure what to use. I'm new to AVCHD.

  2. What version of premiere ? is it a trial version?

CS4/5 have AVCHD 60i preset . Maybe your install got corrupted? Do you have all updates installed?

  4. 60i is just the new name for 30i. So just pick a 29.97 fps interlaced preset.

What is your footage? what mode did you shoot in? 1080i30 and 1080i60 are the same thing, just different naming conventions. They both mean 29.97 frames per second, or 59.94 fields per second

The "p" is for progressive. The "i" is for interlaced

If you shot 60i, use the 60i preset (ie. dont use the "p" presets.)

Oh okay I think I get it now. So if I shot my footage with the PF24 frame rate I would select the AVCHD 1080p24 preset correct?

Nope, Premiere can't handle the 24pf streams. It can only handle native progressive streams. The PF24 is 24p in 60i (i.e. not native progressve). You have to inverse telecine it, and Premiere cannot do this .

OK. Now I understand. You guys have been a lot of help. I used the 1080p presets and the footage just didn't run smooth. I just used the 1080i and it looks just like the orginal and runs and looks perfect. Thank you videohelp people!

No, it is 1080i (interlace), not progressive unless you also selected 24p mode (not recommended).

    As Jagabo said

"60i" 60 fields per second is the same thing as 59.94 fields per second and is the same thing as

"30i" or 29.97i" interlace frames per second.

All these are marketing speak for what used to be known as 29.97 interlace.

One last question. What preset do I use in After Effects CS5? There aren't any AVCHD ones. I don't even see a 1080i one either

  14. Just make a custom comp with the same characteristics

Or, you can just drag the footage to the make new comp icon (easier to do)

I don't see how to make it interlaced on the settings anywhere

  16. The comp will be 29.97 frames per second. If the footage is interlaced , it will have it's fields separated by AE

You can just dynamic link stuff to/from PP

ok but I still don't know what export setting to select in After Effects
    for interlaced footage

  18. if you want to export interlaced footage, in the render settings select upper field first for field render (instead of off, which is default)

Ok I did that but then the footage came out looking like crap. I don't know how to make the export settings identical to the Premiere export settings I used earlier, which was match sequence settings.

  20. Define crap.... can you be a bit more descriptive ? or post examples ?

Was this 60i footage? or 24p in 60i

What settings did you use? What compression ?

All you have to do is drag the footage on the make new comp button. Add to render queue. Click the hot text for render settings. Field render => upper field first =>ok => render

Ok I did it again and rendered out an h264 mp4 file with upper field first. And I picked a bitrate of around 20mbps and it turned out good. The one that looked like crap was like squiggly looking. The only thing I changed from that file was the mbps. God this is confusing
