It seems most cams are now using USB 2 to capture.
I have always used firewire with no probs, I now have a cam that uses USB but my software doesn't recognise it.
When plugged in Windows XP regognises it but Movie maker, Pinnacle studio (only shows the 1394 port as an option), and AVS. doesn't.
Any ideas?

most likely you have a hard drive cam. there is no capturing involved. all you do is copy files off the cam onto your hard drive and then import them into an editor.

thanks for the reply, it's a flash cam, I had a look at it through the windows directory and found a folder that holds it's video files as "mod" files.
But why doesn't any of the software detect the usb input? Windows does. -
There is are two types of USB video transfer. One uses special drivers so the USB connection works like a firewire connection. This was used on a few DV cameras and some HD cameras, and is really only necessary for cameras that use tape for storage. For flash drive based cameras, no such connection exists. The USB connection is used essentially like a flash drive or USB external HDD. That is, the contents are presented as files on a HDD and you load or copy from there to another drive. There is no need to capture because the files are self contained and ready to go. Instead of capturing you either open or import the files.

aahh, it's all starting to make sense. So the "mod"files will need to imported by the softwares for editing.
Ok will need to find out if that works.
thanks guys.
When I do look at it's files it is terribly slow.Last edited by Rayza1; 30th May 2010 at 20:13.

Probably best to copy the files to your local HDD and preview from there. MOD files are usually mpeg-2 video. You can use mpeg-streamclip to re-package the contents into an mpg container, which may make it easier to load into some editors.

thanks for that, will have a look at streamclip.
After some reading up I think you can simply change the file name from MOD to mpeg.
Once again thanks guys, I just didn't grasp the concept of the flash cams as being an ext usb device alone and not needing to capture.. -
We need specific info for camcorder model and the editor you want to use.
Otherwise we are just guessing what you have.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.
