  1. I'm trying to convert a tv show from 1080 down to 720 for filesize purposes (4g down to 1.2g), but the problem comes up that the newly converted file now has the subtitles hard coded.

I don't necessarily need the subtitles, but it would be nice to have the option. I've triple checked that I'm turning off hard coded subtitles in Ripbot, but I keep getting the same result.

Is there a simple solution I'm missing? A better way to achieve the end result?

I guess vsfilter or ffdshow(with subs enabled) is beeing used as decoder. Do you see the subs if you play the video with wmp? If so temporarily disable vsfilter or ffdshow subtitle(you should be able to it from the notifaction area while playing the video).

Or try uncropmkv. It can also easily shrink a mkv.

  3. Well, I tried uncropmkv, and the result I got were not good at all. Filesize went from 4.1g to 3.7g, hardly worth the effort. Ripbot requires ffdshow, but I do not see the icon once it starts. I'll look into the seetings in control panel and see what I can do.

  4. No luck, I turned off all subtitle features in ffdshow and did another conversion, still hard coded subtitles. Blah.

You could remove the subtitle in the mkv with mkvmergegui.

And in uncropmkv must you lower the bitrate to get smaller size, use a bitrate calculator to calculate like videocalc. Or try handbrake, load mkv, under the video tab change the output size and resolution.
