720p,1080p to DVD

I know there is some articles about this but just want to clarify and recommend which one is better or easy to use by all of you pros.

720p,1080p is in MKV format right? Is there any in AVI?

ConvertXtoDVD, DVD Flick, AVS2DVD is the ones i found can be done to do this. Is there any others?

Which one is the better ones then?

MKV is a container format, as is AVI. The codec determines the quality. Most 720p material is H264 encoded in the MKV container, but there is some Xvid encoded 720p material.

Personal preference for this type of conversion is AVStoDVD for quality, and if I need something done quickly, ConvertXtoDVD (version 3 - not liking version 4)

If you have a bluray player that can play AVCHD or a PS3 then you could use Multi-AVCHD to create an AVCHD structure that preserves the 720p/1080p resolution, but lets you burn to a standard DVD blank with Imgburn. Multi-AVCHD can also encode for DVD using the same encoder as AVStoDVD.

No. DVD players don't support high def and they don't support h.264. If you want to watch in a regular DVD player you have to convert to standard def and MPEG 2.

Not only MKV comes with h.264?

Yes, you can put h.264 video in an AVI container. But Divx/DVD players will not play it.

could I piggyback and ask a followon question? I should have done this first instead of posting on this topic but here I am...

I'm new to the technical side of this topic. I have a couple of mp4-formatted movies that came via bittorrent download so, take that in consideration. neither is good quality and I'm as certain as I can about my players/hardware/etc [this is all on pc, not a hard player].
So, I'm just curious as to how it got that way. i have other movie files that are just stunning [and I do not know how the source person achieved such quality].
I was wondering if there is anything in the header information that would explain the history/iterations/generations of the copy?? it would be informative to me to see the "ahh-haaa.... now I know why this is so noisy"...

Backing up dual layer DVDs to single layer DVDs - DVD Rebuilder produces the highest quality, DVD Shrink does it the fastest.

Is there any other good ones? DVDFab,Slysoft CloneDVD,DVDCloner III.
Had one of the program and not sure if its good if not i might consider changing.
Is there a need to install those encoders when using DVD Rebuilder? Dont really want to install too many.

DVD Rebuilder comes with everything you need. It uses HCEnc, which is a very good encoder. With this I have never felt the need to pay for a solution. The quality is as good or better than the paid solutions, and it has other features, such as letterbox 4:3 to true 16:9 conversion as well.
