Hello from Denmark
I want to make a safety copy of my Munsters DVD, but i have quite some problems here...
My own computer is set to region 2, but my wife's computer (which is bought in the Philippines) is set to region 1 as the DVD, so i of course use her computer.
First i used DVD Shrink without any problems, and i got a file at a little more than 4 GB.
Then i tried to use imgburn, and it seemed to burn fine, so great was my surprise when i later found out that the disc was empty! I tried again, but same result... Again i 'burned' an empty DVD+r.
Then i tried to move the file to my own computer, in order to try again there with imgburn, only to get another big surprise... I had connected an external harddisk with a few hundred GB empty space, but as i tried to move the file, i got a message telling that there wasn't space enough on my harddisk!
So...any idea how i can burn my Munsters DVD?
Please explain in an as simple language as possible, since i am a complete idiot concerning computers.
I really appreciate if someone can help me!!
Greetings from Copenhagen

Two words...."Copy Protection". Use DVDFabDecrypter (there IS a free portion of that program).
-
If copy protection is the problem, then why didn't DVD Shrink move it?
-
A small typing error... My wife was disturbing me. I of course meant:
If copy protection is the problem, then why didn't DVD Shrink REmove it? -
vladorlok,
Welcome to Videohelp.
The only way (I know of) to have ImgBurn burn an "empty" disk would be to turn on "Test Mode" before the burn, but since you specified it was a dvd+r, and "Test Mode" burns with +r media result in real burns, that couldn't be what the problem was.
Probably the best way to tell what happened would be to see what the ImgBurn log says. You can find the logs by opening ImgBurn, and in the menus click "Help" and then "ImgBurn logs". Once you have the log open, select the entire section which covers either of the burns in question, copy it, and then paste it into another post (in this thread). -
Thank you for your help to both of you!

OK, now i have tried the DVDFabDecrypter, and again without any success...
First i wanted to choose DVD to Harddisk, because this is the only thing which seems to be free. But i don't know how to do this, so the programme automatically chose DVD to DVD for me. How can i choose DVD to Harddisk here?
Secondly i also had problems after choosing DVD to DVD, because the programme kept refusing to accept my blank DVD+r's, and ejected them all the time with the message No compatible media detected in Drive E.
So what can i do?

vladorlok,
Unfortunately, the ImgBurn log section you posted only covers the creation of two apparently identical ISOs (image files). I need to see the log section that covers the actual burning (of one of the ISOs you created) to a disk.
I should probably mention that the drive in the computer you used to create the ISOs (an Optiarc CDRWDVD CRX890A) can only read dvds, not write them. The only reason I bring it up is because you said (in your first post) "...i am a complete (novice) concerning computers...", and it's generally best to be as thorough as possible when helping someone. If I overshot the mark, and am insulting you, I apologize...my only defense is that I have known more than one "complete novice" who didn't understand that in the beginning. -
No, no, you are not insulting me at all! I am very skilled in playing chess and in a few other things, but not concerning computers... As i wrote i am a complete fool in this area, but concerning the creation of DVD's this is quite a shame, since i collect a lot and have some of the largest collections in the world concerning some horror areas, and very very often it's quite useful to be able to make copies on the computer. Especially because my blanks tend to stop working after some time, so i try to make safty copies of as much as possible.
Concerning your question in the second half of your mail you probably are right (but what do i know...). It would explain my problems in burning my DVD's if my wife's computer drive can't burn. But then why is it that she doesn't seem to have any problems in burning cd-r's? If i want a copy of a music cd, it's easy possible. Could it be possible that her computer only accept cd-r's and not DVD's? This would also explain why the computer asked for a cd when i tried to click on the Munster file, and the programme Nero opened.
So what can i do...? I don't want to change my own computer back to region 1, since it only can be changed maybe 2 more times, and since i live in Denmark where i am surrounded by region 2 DVD's. But maybe i should change my mothers computer to region 2 (it is set to region 4 Australia now, which has been useful to me 2 times ever), but she lives quite far away from here, so i hope there is another solution.
What can i do?
Jan -
1) Your drive can read DVDs but it cannot burn them.
2) A proper DVD ripping/copying program (like DVDFabDecrypter) will eliminate the need
for you to change the region code on your drive(s). All DVD copies are region free. Copy programs
like DVDFabDecrypter basically override the drives region setting "almost" automatically. -
vladorlok,
Could it be possible that her computer only accept cd-r's and not DVD's?
Here's a link to the specifications for that drive, where you can see that it can read assorted cd and dvd disks, but only writes to cd-r and cd-rw media.
What can i do?
If you decide to go that route, there are quite a few people at Videohelp that could offer you solid advice on which model would best fit your requirements, budget, etc. If you're lucky, they might run across this thread, and step in to help you. Otherwise, you could just start a new thread specifically dedicated to what currently available external burner would be recommended, known problems to watch out for, etc. You might as well get the best advice you can...and on that matter, I'm not the most knowledgeable.
Edit:
...or you could do as hech54 recommends. Whichever works best for you is the right solution.Last edited by VegasBud; 9th May 2010 at 14:22. Reason: Slow typing, interruptions, and hech54's additional input before I finished.

Both of VegasBud and hech54's solutions sounds quite usable for me. But i especially like hech54's solution, since it seemingly removes the problem with the region codes from all over the world. It happens that i especially need copies from USA, but also rarely copies from Australian DVDs, or from DVDs from somewhere in Asia, and then the region codes are quite annoying...
As i have explained earlier, i really know approximately nothing about computers, so it is nearly impossible to me to figure out how this DVDFabDecrypter works, which means that i can probably only hope that hech54 patiently will explain how it works!
First i cliked at Download DVD Free here under the headline information and other downloads found near the top of the page: https://www.videohelp.com/tools/DVDFab_Decrypter.
Now here i had to select a VIDEO_TS folder of DVD movie on hard disk.
I tried to find a place where i earlier had created a VIDEO_TS folder and a AUDIO_TS folder through the use of imgburn, but then i got the message that there isn't any protection in this folder.
So what can i do? I really hope that especially hech54 can help me out here with some quite thorough advices, realizing that i am quite stupid concerning computers! If necessary i would happily offer some free copies of movies of which i have thousands, as a thank you!
Others may of course also help, and will of course also receive the same offer if they succeed in explaining me how this programme works!

The best thing for you to do is STOP....start over....and learn the basics.
1)Region Codes
2) Video Formats(PAL and NTSC)
These two things have NOTHING to do with each other. They are two separate things you (may) need to deal with.
A backup copy of a DVD is region free....it DOES NOT effect the video format.
You are in a PAL format country. 95% of the world is a PAL country....only a few countries
(like USA, Canada and Japan) are NTSC video countries....so theoretically you only need to worry
about DVDs from NTSC format parts of the world.
Most of us here in Europe can EASILY play both NTSC and our PAL video format DVDs....all we need
to worry about is the region code on the DVDs. The best way to deal with the region code problem
is to buy a DVD player that can be hacked to "ignore" the region code and just play the damn thing...
And by "DVD Player"....I mean one attached to your television....THAT is a player.
The one in your computer is a DVD "drive" or DVD "burner".Last edited by hech54; 12th May 2010 at 01:44. Reason: spelling

No, no, no, you misunderstand me completely! I have admitted several times that i know extremely little about computers, but there are limits...
Since i eagerly collect especially horror movies, but also music DVDs and also many other genres of movies, and have thousands of them, i OF COURSE can't live without a DVD player which can play any region in the world, and of course especially region 1. I am specialized in classic horror, and own for example the largest Bela Lugosi and the largest Vincent Price collections in the world! This interest is litterarily impossible without being able to play region 1! But as i have mentioned earlier, i have twice come across Region 4, and a quick google search revealed that i also eventually might come across region 3, since i like some K-horror (Korea) and region 6, since i also like some chinese movies!
Now and then i still buy VHS-tapes, since i love to try to create complete collections with some of my favourite actors/directors/studios, and within classic stuff i really occassionally stumble upon something which isn't released on DVD! But since it is correct that at least 95% (probably even 99%) is region 1 or 2 or pal or ntsc, i use these terms interchangeably, since i believe they more or less cover the same areas.
My problem is, that i spend tons and tons of time creating nice home-made box-sets with the same theme of trading stuff, things i really have bought as new, things borrowed from friends or from the library or things recorded from the television. When i try to combine a lot of things on one box-set, i typically need more disc-space, and then i use my stand-alone burner for combining several DVD's on one blank DVD. But when i do that, i need to start with creating a code-free DVD+r (if my "original" is a new DVD), because this one is much easier to copy onto a DVD+r.
I know that there exist some copyprotection-removing devices (i actually own one), but these don't work in 100% of the cases, and i STILL want to have clones on my harddisk, because i now and then sell some of my new DVDs when i have transferred them to my compilation.
So the PERFECT solution for me would be a programme like DVDFabDecrypter, but even though there are limits to my stupidness within computers, i STILL only know very little about computers, so i desperately hope that someone...maybe hech54...can/will guide me through how it works. What especially thrills me is that i don't need to worry about region codes anymore in the future, if that what hech54 says is correct.
Or maybe i should start a new thread and ask specifically for help for DVDFabDecrypter?

It doesn't matter.
There could be 1000 "regions"(though I think there are only 9) but there is only PAL and NTSC video formats.
ANY DVD from ANY REGION....no matter whether it is NTSC or PAL.....will come out REGION FREE when run
through DVDFabDecrypter.
You are already leaps and bounds ahead of Americans.....you can play both NTSC and PAL video formats
with your equipment....all you need to do is conquer the REGION problem....which is the EASIEST to conquer.
Create your copy through DVDFabDecrypter....burn it to a new disc and you are done. All you need to do
is decide whether you want to buy dual layer discs or shrink the movie down to single layer discs.
But all of this should not matter since your machine is already region free....right?Last edited by hech54; 12th May 2010 at 08:02. Reason: can't spell today

No, my machine is not region free. How do i do that? This would actually solve a part of my problem, except that my DVDShrink not always works, and that some discs are too big for a normal single-layer 4.7 GB disc. I have actually tried to buy 8.5 dual layer discs, but why don't they work?
Even though it of course would be a big help if my machine was region free, i still believe that DVDFabDecrypter could be of big help for me, since it solves several problems at the same time.
But how does it work??
Earlier i tried to describe some of my problems, but you (hech54) ignored them. I wrote the following earlier:
It is nearly impossible to me to figure out how this DVDFabDecrypter works, which means that i can probably only hope that hech54 patiently will explain how it works!
First i clicked at Download DVD Free here under the headline information and other downloads found near the top of the page: https://www.videohelp.com/tools/DVDFab_Decrypter.

I tried to find a place where i earlier had created a VIDEO_TS folder and a AUDIO_TS folder through the use of imgburn, but then i got the message that there isn't any protection in this folder. What's the meaning of this? I don't really understand...
So, would you be so kind to guide me through how to rip a DVD through DVDFabDecrypter, hech54?
Or is it eventually easier to explain how to get my machine region free? Then i can maybe get some help for my DVDShrink problems somewhere else on this forum.

Here is a guide for dvd fab from the dvd backup link on the left of the screen:

You will need to do some research and set a budget and decide what type of dvd burner you want to buy. As already mentioned the internal ones are really inexpensive. However external usb models will be a bit more expensive (unless you buy used) and special thin dvd burners for laptops and stuff will be more expensive than a standard 5-1/4 inch format drive for a standard desktop.
I hope we can help you further when more information is provided and you have had a chance to review a guide like the one I have posted the link to.
https://www.videohelp.com/dvdbackup
That is the link I started with. Simply input the name of the program you are using and you will locate relevant user guides. THere were at least 10 guides for dvdfab.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
I have now read two guides for DVDFab, and it has been a very big help! After very small difficulties, i have succeeded in ripping and burning the DVD(s) i had problem(s) with.
But i still have a problem... When i open DVDFab, the first image i get gives me various choices between seven choices from DVD to DVD down to HD Decrypter, and the guides i have seen only deal with DVD to DVD. Since i only have a very limited budget, which is close to zero, because i need to spend quite some thousands of euros on my sickness, i wonder if i can use the HD Decrypter, since it is for free? Even though the purchase of the DVD to DVD programme will destroy the money i have which is earmarked for hobbies for 1½ month, it will definitely be worth it, because this is SO important to me. To copy DVDs and make covers for them really is half of my life at the moment!! Of course i have tried to open the HD Decrypter on my own, but it seems to me that the DVD to DVD option just opens again! Now i just hope that someone knows a link to the HD Decrypter section? If not, then i will just buy the DVD to DVD part. But i really hope that i can be helped...again!
A couple of days ago i opened another thread where i directly asked for help concerning DVDFab, but unfortunately it seems that i have made some people here angry by violating some rules. For that i am of course very sorry. As most people probably have guessed, i haven't read the rules for the forum, and when i tried to do so half an hour ago, i couldn't find them. So maybe someone could be so kind to post a link for the forum rules? Then i promise to read them!
One thing which made someone angry (in this thread) is that i am violating some copyright rules. Of course it would be easy just to say that MANY thousands of people are doing so. Even among the people i know here in Denmark, i might not know anyone at all who is dealing with copying music or movies, who isn't violating these laws... But i have more reasons!
Above i mentioned that this really litterarily is half of my life. Among other things i suffer from something called Aspergers Syndrome, which is a much more light edition of Authism. One serious problem here is that it's quite impossible for me to say anything in just a few words. Everytime i talk or write, it becomes a long speech or a small book! So now i just hope that people will excuse that this reply is quite long. Another problem is that i have some hobbies which take up almost all of my life, and people are often quite annoyed at me, because it seems impossible to discuss anything else with me than movies, music or chess! The only exception seems to be my parents and my wife. With them i can discuss anything. And for the last couple of years it has been even worse, since my only hobby has been movies!
I really work A LOT on my movie collection, which is more precious to me than anything else, except my wife of course! So to be able to solve all copy-related problems is VERY important to me!! I just hope this makes sense...
Finally i also often defend my violation of the rules in my mind with the fact that i might have 1000 DVDs bought as new, which i believe is quite a lot more than the average person... Now waite a minute will someone probably say now... How can you buy that many DVDs if you have such a limited budget? To that i can only say that i haven't always had this Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/intestine related sickness, which is so expensive to cure, and once i also had a work!
But with that many new DVDs in my collection i try to tell myself that the movie companies only should be happy for someone like me, on who they really are earning a LOT! Since they really are earning a LOT on me (and will do again when i am cured) i believe that it only is fair that i am allowed to make some illegal copies. But that is probably just my opinion...and others probably disagree here.
Finally someone stated in the other thread i made (which is closed down now) that i also violated the forum rules by offering free DVDs in exchange for help in using DVDFab Decrypter. For that i am of course also sorry! But as i mentioned earlier, i unfortunately haven't read the rules yet, so i didn't have any idea... Sorry!
In addition to my lack of knowledge of the forum rules, i didn't know that i quite easily could be helped by just posting a link to a guide. I just felt that it would be quite time consuming to write step by step how i should do, and i didn't feel that i could ask anyone of that much help! That's why i thought that it would only be fair to offer some sort of compensation, and the one thing i have quite a lot of is movies (that is...i have also several thousand LP's, but i refuse to separate from any of them, and they are quite difficult to copy)!
I actually did read before i registered that off-topic discussions are forbidden, but i just believe that everything i have written here is related to my DVD copying problems, and why i have violated some rules. So i hope this mail was ok...
I think that's all i have to say.

One more thing:
Each time i open DVDFabDecrypter i get a virus warning. But when i when click on "deny access" through my virus protection, i haven't got any more problems!
Do i need to worry about this? What can i do, if i need to worry? Why do i always get this virus warning?
