I use http://www.autohotkey.net/~degarb/ to demux dvds to h.264. This is the only single click batch method to encode.
But, I can only watch on notebook computers, and no way to watch on my 20 year old TV (This $100 second hand, 20 year old tv has been on nearly 20 hours a day for last 5 years, and out lasted 6 brand new time-warner lobby HD tvs). I am not able to afford the $100 converter at radio shack, too many other bills on my back and counting with forced insurance-higher taxes.
I was considering a $30 divx player. But Divx converter Plus 8 doesnt appear to work (it cannot open and analyze the h.264 files).
Anyone with a free converter?

xvid4psp, virtualdub, avidemux, megui, hdconverttox, avanti, many more... - all free. Not all of them batch process, but you can queue up a list in some of them

I am not aware that virtual dub can convert to divx.
I just spent last 3 hours trying software to do this, no luck-nothing working. What works and free? I need only h.264 to divx.Love they forum and fellow poster. -
They all work, they all are free
Maybe you are doing something wrong, or something is wrong with your source file?
Something doesn't make sense, because you mention dvd's as the source, and also h.264, which can't be true since all DVD's are MPEG2 - EDIT: do you mean you converted dvd => h.264 and now you want to convert to divx? I would start with the original DVD instead of converting the h.264 version, otherwise you lose quality twice
They all can convert to xvid, but you can convert to divx with vdub, if you have divx installed (not free). For all purposes, xvid will play on standalones just as well.Last edited by poisondeathray; 1st May 2010 at 15:04.

I use decryptor to extract dvd. Then, one click to batch them to h.262, and demux them. There is no program other than brakedir101 that can do such an easy batch conversion.
So, inorder to buy a divx player, I need simple drag and drop of these mp4s to divx format. Divx8 just stares at me, and won't analyze. Version 7, keep crapping out and crashing after 79 megs. I use virtualdub, but 1.9 cannot even open an mp4.Love they forum and fellow poster. -
I found automen. Not a batch deal, but could live with it. But automen doesn't do divx. Xdiv won't play on a divx player, I strongly am assuming.

I feel strongly --against business plans of HHGreg and BestBuy-- that, in reality, after 5 minutes, it doesn't matter if the eye glasses are on or off, if in black and white or color, or SD, HD, or 3D. You get pulled into the content. Really, good stereo (I am not a fan of 5.1) is more important. Space is more important, as amassing choices trumps pixels every time.
I stated why. Because, the gui's suck for hand brake and others. Takes too much time. One click is my limit. I can rip a dozen dvds starting at 10 pm after work with only about 4 minutes of my time (while I shower and eat), and then encode them in 1 second with brakedir101, with all language and settings. This allows me to go to bed immediately after extraction, while the computer works silently in background until encoding done.
Also, because, h.264 is superior. And I might only burn a fraction of the movies that I have to divx. So no need to go directly to divx.Last edited by degarb; 1st May 2010 at 21:51.

If you want simplicity then download WinMENcoder. Batch conversion, simple settings. If you want to convert to DivX make sure you have the proper codec. You should know that when converting to DivX, or any AVI format for that matter, that you won't be able to keep multiple languages and such. It'll likely take you more than 1 click in any program.
Also, DivX players play Xvid files just fine. I convert all my anime to XviD and watch it using my DivX DVD player.
BTW, how do you rip 12 DVDs at a time? Not that you couldn't have that many optical drives, but I don't know why you would. -
vdub has other plugins that you can open other filetypes directly , do a search there are dozens of threads on how to do this, and you can download the plugins from this site (click on the vdub hottext and there are download packs if you scroll down)
https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/286901-VirtualDub-Now-Has-a-Directshow-Driver-Plugin
an .avs script is through avisynth, it might be more difficult for you to do if you're not already familiar with it, although it's more reliable than the vdub plugins
you may find it easier and when using one of the other programs, like xvid4psp, or avidemux , which can open the h.264/mp4 files natively (xvid4psp creates avs scripts for you, and you need ffdshow installed, along with avisynth) -
Yes, I got a winmencoder graphical. I see the batch options now. And, it analyzes the files far quicker than handbrake analyzes the ripped directories. So doing 10 files wouldn't take 20 minutes of staring at a blank screen of my single core computer, like in handbrake. (With handbrake, each movie takes 20 seconds to 4 minutes to analyze, and I must still choose the subtitles manually and languages for each movie. Which is why I use brakedir101, you set your prefs, then just click the exe or schedule to encode.)
Doing research yesterday, I found you need to enable fourcc in winmencoder. They didn't say what file extension a divx player would need. I assume avi. Would the cheaper walmart divx player be able to do the xdiv?
Unsure if I should wait too, they may start selling a sub $100 dvd player that would do h.264 mp4 (what my files are now). Or something that can network and play movies from my wireless network that live on my external harddrive. My current dvd player, I got for $100 with fm/am tuner, 5.1 surround, aux. We still watch vhs, have a converter box, and have a free to air satellite box. So, the fit will be tenuous. It will need analog channel 3/4 out put for the switch.Love they forum and fellow poster. -
I couldn't say about a specific player other than my own. It's a Phillips DVD player, the model escapes me ATM, and I've personally used AVI and DivX extensions on it and it works fine. My Phillips player is the bomb though.
If you want to buy something that plays h.264 files natively then there are plenty of options. I would see no need for you buying a DVD player that does that since you already have a DVD player. You can get some type of device that plays virtually all types of media files. It'd leave you with a broader range of options should you end up needing/wanting to play other files type one day. I don't have any to recommend, but I'm sure others on this site do.
