I am attempting to rip a dvd and want to maximize the picture quality at the start of the process.

Here are the steps I take.

    1) I rip the DVD to iso with DVD Decrypter
    2) Then convert the iso to avi using Fair use Wizard.

I feel the issue lies in my first step. Is there a better program out there to back up DVDs to iso to preserve the quality?

I have attached an image of what the video looks like after its converted to avi. I get horizontal lines in sections of the video. this also happens when I rip the dvd to vob files as well. Any help or direction will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

Did you let fairusewizard auto detect the video type? I have seen this a few times and in each case it warned me something about smart deinterlace.

Yeah, that looks like a major interlace problem. Generally if the old DVDDecrypter will rip it and the VOBs or ISO plays back properly on the computer, that will be an exact copy of the DVD, depending on your settings. No quality loss. DVDDecrypter itself hasn't been updated in quite some time, DVDFab HD Decrypter or AnyDVD Decrypter are better for newer videos. But with older DVDs, any of those programs will work about the same.

And you should be aware that not all software PC players display interlaced video properly. TVs do. VLC with the 'Bob' interlace filter checked should give you good quality with MPEG-2 interlaced video from a DVD. You normally de-interlace for Divx/Xvid or most AVI type output.

Once you have a good rip of the DVD, then the conversion settings in FairUse determine the AVI quality.

No, it's got nothing to do with DVD-Decrypter. You simply didn't deinterlace prior to the encode step. You should do this in FairUse.

Note: Deinterlacing should only be done on interlaced DVDs, and absolutely not on movie DVDs (which are telecined and not interlaced).

This worked like a charm. It did degrade the picture a tad bit, but it is better than what it looked like before.

    Thanks.
