  1. I suddenly have no sound when I play live TV in Windows Media Center 2005 on a Windows XP. (This has happened occasionally in the past but would resolve with rebooting).

Naturally I have made sure sound is not muted anywhere. All other sounds play correctly, including playing a DVD in Media Center.

I have tried using system restore and removing some of the items I have installed recently (even though I think it was still working after they were installed).

I have tried reinstalling the software for the video card (ATI eHomeWonder) the sound card (Sound Blaster Audigy) and installed a new set of audio codecs. A couple of months ago I added the most recent Media Center update. Rechecking Windows Update there are no new updates available. (I had considered removing the update and then reinstalling but when I began to uninstall I got a warning message that a large number of other program would not work if this was removed and I was afraid this might create even new problems).

I am running out of ideas as to how to fix this. Any more suggestions?

It is possible that the sound recorder on your ATI has gone out, can you hear sound if you play a vhs tape through the same connection, or does it record anything in silence and play with sound after the fact?

  3. Thanks for answering. I haven't tried hooking up a VHS tape but I have been wondering if it is a hardware problem. (With live television there is no sound either live or with recordings). I spent so many hours last weekend on this that unless someone comes up with something easy to try I am thinking of trying a new card (or USB) tuner this weekend. I figure I'll get one such as from Hauppauge which appears to have its own viewing software so that if I can't get media center to work I'll just use the software which comes with the new device to view tv.
