Avidemux works only on some mkv files and even if it worked, frame accuracy is all messed up (Avidemux kept complaining/warnings about B frame) .

I tried mkvtoolnix-unicode-3.2.0-setup.exe, but was told by this program that every mkv file I loaded got NO chapters? (most of my mkv files are 6 - 8 GB and they all have at least 4 - 5 scenes in each of them).

Any help will be much appreciated!

p/s what's the best tools for editing mkv files? a)free and b)paid, thanks.

Highly compressed formats have keyframes (I Frames) widely spaced, so frame accurate editing is very difficult. That's one way they achieve high compression. All editors will have the same problem unless they re-encode the whole file, or at least at the cut points. Divx/Xvid uses a 300 frame spacing by default for keyframes. Your MKV is probably similar. MKV (Probably H.264) was meant as an end product, not for ease of editing.

One option is to use a intermediary file format and edit in that, then re-encode. Neo Scene is one program for that.
