This is my first camcorder which I just received for FREE. It takes those tapes, and to dump to my computer, it is my understanding that I need the firewire port (DV) to interface.

    Two questions:

    1. Is this replaceable by any feasible means (technically/financially) ? EDIT: I guess not !https://eservice.sony.com/webrma/web/displaycost.do

    2. Is there another jack I can use which can then be adapted to a firewire plug to go into the computer ?

Not in the same quality. For digital transfer you need a working IEEE-1394 port.

Next best is analog capture off the S-Video port.

    Or borrow another camcorder.
