I need some help. I am trying to create a workflow to do the following:
1. Capture from DirecTV using a Hauppauge HD-PVR
Accomplished with included software ArcSoft Total Media Extreme
2. Convert the file to something I can work with in a video editing program
Accomplished with VideoReDo. Converting files to MPEG2 with AC3 Dolby 5.1 audio.
3. Now here is where things are getting tough.
My editing program of choice, Pinnacle Studio 14, does a great job with the video but the program does not accept Dolby 5.1 which is a deal breaker.
I am currently evaluating Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum. The audio is great but now I'm having problems with the video.
I am rendering to a DVD compliant MPEG-2 file. All my settings seem correct (aspect ratio, fps, etc).
If I select "None" for Deinterlace Mode (which is what I think it should be) I get interlace lines when there is movement or the scene changes. If I select "Blend" or "Interpolate fields" the video is jerky.
All of these tests were from a burned DVD on a DVD player connected to a HD tv.
MPEG2 source file is 13.5 Mbps
Any suggestions?

in vegas make sure your output field order matches the input, i.e. if the source is top field first make the mpg-2 output tff. try to maintain 720x480 30fps interlaced throughout the process for the best results.

you might have to check in the custom settings when you go to render.

With all selections exactly as your picture, the custom tab is grayed out (can't select).

bummer. is there any template in the mainconcept mpeg-2 section where you can select custom? if so you can make your own templates.

I think the problem is not with Vegas Studio but with the original conversion of the file from H264 to MPEG2 in VideoReDo. There is a lot of control at that point so I will experiment with different settings such as:
1. Encoding Mode. I was using single pass but I've read that 2 pass should give better results.
2. Deinterlace Mode. My options are None, BOB, WEAVE, and smart. Any suggestions?
3. Max Resolution. It was captured at 1920x1080 but since a DVD is 720x480 should I choose that resolution?
Thanks!
