  1. Hi,

Is there a free tool that can open a media file (mpg, avi, etc)., and allow you to pan around and decide to pull say a 10 minute segment out of the middle of it? I don't want anything recoded, I just want to extract a smaller amount of video out of a larger video file.

    Thanks,

    Alan

  2. It depends on the file format, but avidemux can handle most

  3. Hi,

Yes, that looks like it will do the job well.

Where can I find the lavc or mpeg2enc for it?

    Thanks,

    Alan

I'm not sure what you're asking? Everything should be bundled with it. Perhaps you have downloaded a different build?

  5. Hi,

Milestone build crashes for me when I try to encode dvd. The SVN doesn't however. What type of audio should be picked from the audio? I tried PCM, but it made the video size bigger than the source even when I cut down the bitrate... Is there an option that is DVD compliant and compressed?

    Thanks,

    Alan

  7. Hi Everyone,

I am getting it to output, but the audio is not in sync. I've tried a few different audio output types. Any tips?

    Thanks for the help guys,

I don't understand why you have "tried a few different output types"?

  9. Hi,

I started out wanting to just pull a section of video from a larger video into a smaller one and that was true. But now I am trying to see if I can make the video fit a smaller disc by recoding it.

Is there more info on why the audio/video lose sync with each other?

    Thanks,

    Alan

PCM uncompressed works excellent for DVD. You can also use MP2 (a bit less compression than MP3) at 224kbps is my memory serves me right.
Then of course, there's AC3 format

    Smaller disc meaning......what?
    Data disc? No Problem.
DVD disc you wish to play in your DVD player? NOPE
It must be MPEG2 with certain audio (PCM being the LARGEST so ignore the previous post)
and MP3 is NOT within DVD Video specs (so again ignore the previous post).

Audio sync problems almost always start at the source. It is rarely the fault of programs
like AviDemux or VirtualDub. What is the source of the video that is outputting out of sync?

  12. Hi,

Source is Tivo files from a series 2, dumped to mpg with direct show media dump...

If I drop the output from direct show media dump to the win dvd maker, it recodes them very large. Can fit 2 hours on a DL dvd. I have noticed that recoding with avidemux ahead of time prevents win dvd maker from recoding them huge.

If I use avidemux to just copy both the video and audio into a new mpeg, it does not have sound issues.

I checked and the audio from tivo might be ok, so I am running a test now that is recoding the video, but copying the audio.

I still wonder though, why it has issues when I try to recode the audio with MP2 or AC3.

I appreciate all the help everyone is giving me; I am totally new at this.

    Thanks,

    Alan

  13. I see you don't take the time to read replies and are quick to judge.

    I said MP2, not Mp3. Easy read: http://www.gromkov.com/faq/general/dvd_audio_formats.html

PCM uncompressed is within DVD video specs, and is obviously a larger filesize as alank2 already found out. I was simply pointing out that PCM is in fact the best choice because of quality (just not the ideal in this case)

And because of that alank2, ignore hech54 assumptions.

  14. alank2 - If you are making cuts, make sure they are on keyframes, or that might explain the sync issues

  15. Hi,

I am reading replies although I may not understand them.

If Video=Copy and Audio=Copy, the output has the audio synchronized perfectly.

If Video=DVD and Audio=[Copy, or AC3, or MP2], the output has the audio out of sync with the video.

    Thanks,

    Alan

For my testing, I've been copying the whole video so far. How do you know you are on a keyframe? It says it is indexing when you open a file, is that it figure out where the keyframes are?

    Thanks,

    Alan

Just for laughs...next time you try a "test"...make sure you hit the "previous keyframe" or "next keyframe" (<< - >>)
buttons in the toolbar below the video to make sure you are cutting on keyframes. That is usually vital to edits without re-encoding.
