Following the VirtualDub help files I wanted to set my format to YUY2 (I think) and then use the Huffyuv compression codec as it is highly recommended.

When I try to set the custom format to YUY2 I get an error "The Capture device does not support the video format"

The device I am using is "Microsoft DV Camera and VCR (DirectShow)".

So I thought I could just change to the "Microsoft WDM Image Capture" device. When I try this VirtualDub hangs.

    What am I doing wrong?

  2. You're capturing from a DV camcorder, Canopus ADVC, or similiar? Just capture as DV AVI. That's an exact copy of what's on the tape (or comes out of the ADVC).

capturing from a DV camcorder. I was just trying to optimize the compression so I can tame the file size.

Re-read jagabo's post. DV-AVI is the EXACT data that is on the DV camcorder. You are merely doing a digital transfer from tape to computer. Select a DV codec (Cedocida is recommended -- and must be installed separately) and capture.

  5. You don't really even need a DV codec for capture.

Converting from DV to HuffYUV will increase the file size -- except in some rare circumstances (like an all black video).
