I posted a topic about not being able to burn; I now think I've found the reason.

I have a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T50F DVD-RW Drive. I found that I have trouble playing DVDs AND Burning with the drive. Every other minute, a warning would show up saying:

    "USB Device Not Recognized:
One of the USB Device bla bla..."

    Is my DVD-RW Drive screwed?

The only way to prove it would be to put it in another computer and see you experience the same problem.

The only way to really know for sure there is an issue with the unit or system is to try the device on another system

    By the way

    Using desktop or notebook ?

The "USB Device Not Recognized" error is most likely triggered by an external device

Control Panel > System and Maintenance > System > Device Manager

Go down the bottom to usb devices list and check each for "power management" ... if engaged then disable this feature .. reboot system

Id also go up and uninstall the devices under SATA ... once more, reboot the system and it will reload the drivers for those devices

Ive not seen this usb error relate to sata ... different sub system

You might want to go through this link to see if any of the reported solutions help

I'm using a notebook and the drive is built in.

I checked under the USB Devices list and there seems to be no Power Management. I also don't see SATA.

Also, I tried disabling the CD/DVD Drive in "Device Manager" but I guess the "USB Device Not Recognized: Malfunctioning" warning still pops up every so and then. So I'm not sure anymore.

You can try uninstalling the drive from "devices" in the control pannel and rebooting, might try blowing it out with a can of air.

blowing can air can damage the optical lens. IMHO sounds like the drive could be failing.

    Update:

It seems that I could burn anything anything around 3600 MB or less. (When I tried adding another 700 MB movie into the burning process), it wouldn't work.

What is the problem here? Does the drive need to be cleaned or something like that?

An internal DVD drive is very unlikely to be a USB device. If it's the typical DVD drive like on my laptop, just open the tray and you're looking at the laser lens. Swab it off with a clean Q-tip and see if that helps.

But it sounds like you have other problems related to the USB error. Do you have any USB devices connected to the notebook, mouse, keyboard, external drive?

What program are you using to burn with the DVD drive? Nero and ImgBurn both should generate a log that you can post here or look at for errors that may give you a clue about the cause of the problem. Laptop drives can be a PITA to replace and fairly expensive.

It worked! I swiped the laser lens and now everything's back to normal.

    Thank you, everyone.
