Media player classic is saying “cannot render file”
VLC Media player is opening up something but its frozen and it says its just 10secs long. OR sometimes it wont open anything.

Windows Media Player 11 is saying “Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file. For additional assistance, click web help”

I went on this page and opened up the wmv file
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q316992
and this popped up “Windows Media Player cannot play the file because a network error occurred. The server might not be available. Verify that you are connected to the network and that your proxy settings are correct.”

I changed the settings to “do not use proxy server” but the same thing is happening.

Even with “auto detect proxy server” the same thing is happening.

The files are between 300mb -800mb.

Where did you take those files ? I suspect they are protected or corrupted : check your properties files with the Windows explorer or send them to MediaInfo or G-Spot.

they cant all be corrupt. some ok might be but no all of them. i got them from different places. some from youtube, some from friends. and the link i gave is from the microsoft help page so that definately can't be corrupt. (??)

Maybe there's something wrong with your Windows Media Player settings. I suggest you to re-install WMP11. I took the link you gave and the files were playing fine.

What browser you use for Internet ? Update the windows media player plugin if you use Firefox and try to play the link again.
And as I posted, verify if your wmv files are protected you said you picked some of them from friends. And if they are a little corrupted, you can try to fix them with AsfBin.

ok, this is a daft question but how do you re-install a plugin? what is that.
i use internet explorer 8 and i have firefox 3.5.6. i use both. and the wmv wont work on neither.

also im not relying on the wmv's i've got anymore. just as long as the link on the microsoft page works i'll know its fixed.

    thanks.
