Wow. First post and you're already in violation of the rules. Nice way to start.
I'm not in the mood to coddle you, so pardon my bluntness. Since you're one of those "I will just freakin' die if I have to watch black bars on the screen!" people, you're kind of wasting your time here. People like you are never really interested in learning the ins and outs of video work. Answering your question properly would just be a waste of time. Just hit the Zoom button on your HDTV to fill up the screen on letterboxed video. And note that many videos are ONLY released in letterbox, so I guess it sucks to be you. -
Here's a link to the rules.

What shape is your screen ?
Why do you want to throw away parts of the image ?
Why don't you buy your DVDs ?
Most DVDs are released in the shape the movie was made. Many film formats are wdier even than widescreen TVs, hence the bars. This is not a bad thing, just the way it is. If you have an older 4:3 TV screen, and you crop a widescreen movie (say 2.35 : 1 aspect ratio) you are throwing away almost half the screen. Even if you have a widescreen TV you are throwing away around 25%.
What is the point ?Read my blog here.

If you are indeed downloading copyrighted DVDs/Video, then that would be a major problem with us.
But generally if the video is letter boxed, there's not much you can do about it. You can crop it, but without extensive cropping and losing a fair amount of the video real estate, no easy fix.
The easier 'fix', as mentioned, is to zoom your player. Otherwise you would have to re-encode the video, resulting in some quality loss.
And you didn't mention what type of display you have, widescreen 16:9 or the conventional 4:3 screen. If you have 4:3, then you are stuck with letter boxes if the video is widescreen, unless you crop about 1/3 of the horizontal picture away. If you have a wide screen viewing system and the video is 4:3, then about the same, though vertically. There is no easy fix that will give you the same quality as the video you have. Zooming the player is the best choice most times.
