Situation: Sony laptop that is only single display capable (GPU) graphics processor unit, per display property's settings and Sony website. The docking station will not allow it - in fact, opted out to buying the docking station.

Goal: Want to output that single display to two external monitors as an extended desktop and completely bypass the internal laptop display.

Currently: Only allowed to output to one monitor with the built-in laptop display as the primary (swappable) display. I've used an DVI (monitor) to HDMI (the graphics port) adapter to connect between the laptop and the current monitor.

I was wondering if there is a switch/box that will allow me the "goal" setup I had in mind OR I am just dreaming here?

I'm not sure if this is exactly what you are looking for, but it is supposed to provide multiple monitor support for devices with only one video output. I have not seen or used one, so can't vouch for it. It's available at NewEgg

Edit: did a little more searching on the above site, and found this

  3. Get an HDMI splitter.

    http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001KEDMP0/

Note that HDCP encryption will not work with those so Blu-ray playback will bet out.

One exception to the HDCP encryption problem: http://www.curtpalme.com/MUX-HD.shtm

Thanks for the reply, folks. But for the record here, what I am looking for that I seem to have big confusion or have no direction for is:

On my laptop, I want to have two external displays that is extended desktop between two monitors... not using the internal laptop display at all. Also, i've bought the hdmi-to-dvi adaprter plug thingy as I've chosen to use the hdmi out of the laptop over the rgb/vga out. Again, the graphics processor of the laptop only supports one external display originally. Right now, I am using the internal LCD display and the external as the extended desktop to do work and that is not ideal. I want to equally use the two external 30" NEC LCD monitors for work -not viewing movies.

You should have mentioned this in your original post. Using a splitter would simply give you the exact same thing on both monitors. If you want an extended desktop you need a graphics card that feature. And most laptops only support it using the built in display as one of those monitors.

You might be able to use a pair of the USB adapters like JimmyS linked to. Those USB extenders will not give you real time high definition video playback. But they will be adequate for typical desktop application use.

Matrox also makes products that will split a large desktop over two (or more) monitors. You would then configure your laptop to use only the DVI/HDMI output (if you can do that) and the Matrox adapter will send half the desktop to one monitor and half to the other.

    That's probably your best bet.
