So when I use PS3 Video 9 to convert .avi to .mp4, does this improve the quality if I use the 1080p profile or does it stay the same or get worse?

Reconversion does not improve any quality.

Any conversion will reduce the quality, as Baldrick mentions. You may be able to minimize the effect, and whether or not it's noticeable is in the eyes of the beholder, but you still lose quality when you reconvert.

If your AVI has a DivX/Xvid video stream and an MP3 audio stream (as I mentioned in your other thread), don't convert. The PS3 will play DivX/Xvid AVIs/.divx files, though you may need to update your PS3's firmware.

At best it appears to stay the same (i.e., visually no different). At worst, you will see a difference, and perhaps a great difference.

You say nothing at all about your source. If you convert a crappy 700 MB downloaded AVI file and are expecting to get bluray quality 1080p then you are sadly deluded.

Given the PS3 can play many forms of AVI file natively, you should only re-encode when absolutely necessary.
