    Hello
I had a simple text file which was created by Notepad. so I got many important information on that text file. but mistakenly I just copied some other data(text) on that notepad file and saved it. so now I can't have my old important texts. will you please tell me what can I do?
    I really need help.

    Thanks in Advance

You need an "undelete" utility, in case there are previous versions of the file kicking around on the harddisk which may be recoverable. Try not to do too much in the meantime that would save files and possibly overwrite those sectors.

And then buy yourself a USB key drive to back up to, so it can't happen again!

Unless you have, from time to time, made copies of this file elsewhere on your HDD, you are unlikely to recover anything useful with an undelete tool.

Thanks MJ, but as a matter of fact I didn't delete anything, I just copied some text on my text file and saved it. so with Undelete utilities like Smart Undelete Software I just can recover my deleted files not overwrited ones and by the way I've got a USB flash. but things like this happen

Unfortunately that was the only file

    OK... sorry I can't help.
I guess you might want to look for a text editor for future use which saves a backup copy each time it saves.
    Good luck

How do you paste into an existing document and lose the text that is already in place in the document?

I didn't lose the text file. I've already got the text file, just paste some notes on the main notes

  12. I know this doesn't help in this specific case but should you ever go to Vista or 7 (Ultimate or Business, I believe) then you will be able to use the built-in Shadow Copy (aka Previous Versions) feature. This allows you to go back to earlier versions of a file even if you made changes and saved them. Note, this has been available for many years on network shares (from a Windows server) in corporate environments.

Do a system restore. The original file is still there in System Volume Information. I always do it.
