Hey folks. Does anyone know if this unit plays MKV files? Friend of mine has a whack of MKV files from an old comedy series, but I don't feel like watching them all on my PC.

Thanks Baldrick. Always a helpful fellow.Originally Posted by Baldrick

"If you want to convert to AVI then I suggest using All to AVI Converter. To retain the high video quality I suiggest using a frame-rate of 2500fps. It does however make a large file size of about 500MB per half hour episode. Lower frame rate reduces the file size and also reduces video quality"

Does this make sense to you, Baldrick?Cheers,

That player won't play MKV files, period. It only understands AVI containers.

Your "mate" is an idiot. He has confused frame rate with bit rate. It's a truly horrible mistake. A bit rate of 2500 Kbps when encoding should give you very good quality.

Thanks for your input. While my mate may be wrong about this, I see no reason to call someone you don't even know "an idiot." Maybe you need to calm yourself a little.Originally Posted by jman98Cheers,

The Philips 5990 also plays MPG and MP4 containers. MP4 is limited to Divx/Xvid video and Mp3 audio. No h.264. No resolutions over 720x576. You might be able to remux your MKV into AVI or MP4 if the codecs and resolutions are acceptable.
