I have been given a number of MTS files and my computer is way too slow to render them properly (it's a 7ish year old machine and wasn't amazing spec when new). It plays the sound, and will play a frame or two of the video once it starts, but then gives up and the image is frozen (sound plays to the finish), so I'm assuming it isn't a codec problem.

I have downloaded Xvid4PSP and converted one video to AVI, but it plays exactly the same as the MTS. Is there any way to convert the videos to AVI (or anything else that will work with windows movie maker) that doesn't try to stream the source video but renders it one frame at a time (I don't need it to work quickly, I need it to work). Quality isn't an issue, although the videos were recorded in HD I can't use that much information and will be looking to compress the lot down to a more manageable size.

I have tried to be as specific as I can, but I'm pretty much a newbie so apologies for the rambling.
