I have used numerous applications to convert DVDs to H.264, all of which are frontends for x264. I have never had any problems with either Fairuse Wizard or HandBrake. However, Fairuse does not allow x264 configuration for the profiles I want to use and it insists on resizing the video output. HandBrake does a good job, but the way it handles subtitles is not suitable for some of my movies. In any event, I wanted to use x264 in a different context, so I tried MeGUI, AutoMKV, and x264 in CLI mode. I have used MeGUI in the past on a different system with no problems, but now it, as well as AutoMKV and x264 CLI, crashes as soon as I start the encode. I immediately get the following message:

    x264.exe has stopped working.

The MeGUI and AutoMKV logs show no signs of any errors. The only information I can find on my system is an Event Viewer error, which is the following:

Faulting application x264.exe, version 0.0.0.0, time stamp 0x4a447d47, faulting module AviSynth.dll_unloaded, version 0.0.0.0, time stamp 0x494eb94d, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x02030c6d, process id 0xdd4, application start time 0x01ca06459b9946e0.

This is further frustrating because, as I indicated above, both Fairuse and HandBrake work fine. Does anyone have any thoughts as to a solution for this problem? Thanks in advance.

I have tried MediaCoder and it results in the same(?) error, except that it apparently handles it internally because Windows Vista does not throw an error message. Its log simply says there was an error withe the encoder (x264). Nevertheless, I would like to solve my problem with x264 rather than just try to find a workable application. It may come to that if I cannot get a solution, but not yet.

  4. have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling the latest version? 32bit/64bit?

Yes, I did a fresh install of 32-bit MediaCoder 0.7.1.4475, but it still failed to encode with x264. I am wondering if MeGUI, MediaCoder, and possibly other frontends are .NET applications and if there might be an incompatibility with .NET 3.5 that is installed with Windows Vista. I am just reaching here, but I know that HandBrake and Fairuse Wizard are not .NET apps and they both encode without error.

  6. did you install the latest standalone version of the x264 codec? not one included with other front ends.

Well, I'm feeling a little foolish as it turns out that the entire problem was related to the video decoders I had installed. I was using CoreAVC for H.264 decoding and NVIDIA PureVideo for MPEG decoding. I uninstalled both of these codecs and reinstalled ffdshow rev 3029. Now, MeGUI and MediaCoder work perfectly. Sorry for this almost unnecessary thread. However, maybe someone else will benefit if they run into this problem. Moreover, this misadventure caused me to seriously begin testing MediaCoder which, preliminarily, I like very much. I'll have to further examine its large number of settings. Thanks Mini.
