I want to rip a single scene from a DVD, not the entire movie (it is one of the extras on the DVD, not a scene from the middle of the movie).

How would I even find this scene?

And should I crop the top and bottom black borders? (Woulden't the video play non-fullscreen on a widescreen display if the borders are still present?) If so, I assume these are a standard reoslution right? How many pixels form the top and bottom should I set virtualdub to crop it?

I asked what I should do after ripping the DVD on IRC channels but everyone kept telling me different programs to use and were fighting over each other about what to do, many were complaning I should use nothing but notepad and write every AVS script form scratch (I don't know anywhere near enough AVS to do that!).

So what tools should I do to rip this scene? I am not going to be adding multiple audio tracks or soft subtitles or anything, I just want to rip a 5 minute bonus scene from the DVD.

I tried DVD Decrypter but it just gives me the error shown:

Is this a newer commercial DVD? Then must you use AnyDVD or the free DVDFAb Decrypter to rip it first.

THen can you use DVD Shrink in the reauthoring mode to cut out exactly what you want.

Yes, although its commercial, its not professionally made, I doubt it even has copy protection.

Try dvd shrink directly then and see if can copy the dvd better than dvd decrypter.

If it wont work I guess you must try latest dvdfab decrypter and rip the ENTIRE movie and then cut out the clip.

I guess you can play the dvd without any problems?

Yes, although I only tried playing that scene on my computer, I played the whole disk in my PS3.

Huh, seems I was able to copy the .VOB file straight off the disk, it plays fine in MPC.

Now I just need to find out how to convert it to MP4
