    Hi,

I have a Sony Bravia, and I watch all of my movies on the Philips DVP5990 upscaling DVD player. I've noticed that the picture quality on some of the DVDs that I own are outstanding compared to other DVDs that I own. I was wondering if anyone had any reccomendations about what DVD movies look the best on upscaling players. I've tried SUPERBIT movies and those all look fantastic, but sadly not every movie has a SUPERBIT transfer . Also, do 2 disc special editions of movies have a better transfer than the single disc? I was watching the 2 disc special edition of the 1st Harry Potter movie and the picture was very crisp. After that I watched the single disc version of the 4th Harry Potter movie and the picture wasn't as great.

    Thanks

Most of the time the single disc editions are just the first disc of the two disc editions. Certainly the higher the bitrate, the better the disc *should* look, and therefore the better it should upscale. That said, other things I have noticed are that clean, grain free titles tend to upscale better than very grainy titles, and sharper titles tend to upscale better than softer titles. I suspect that this has something to do with the upscalers work from edges and motion. Noise and grain tend to waste a lot of their energy and confuse more than nice clean edges.

Superbit movies were probably less of a con back when studios tended to try to cram too much onto a single disc. In many double disc editions the bitrates of the features often match the bitrates used in the old Superbit titles, which is one of the reasons Superbit went the way of the dodo.

Ill say this - the Genesis Farewell dvd from Paris is absolutely beautiful. Its the best looking dvd I own. It is almost better than Star Wars Episode 3 which is a great transfer.

I don't know what it is but that recording was movie like and reallly sparkles well.
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?
