Burning a AVI file onto a DVD, but there's No Audio--Need Help

Hey guys,

I have a AVI file that's pretty big on my comp. After I started playing it, I noticed there was no sound, and the WMP stated I needed a AC3 Filter codec.

I downloaded it, and the sound is great on the computer--everything works fine.

But when I go to burn the dual layer DVD (file is big), I pop the DL DVD into my PS3 and only the video plays--no audio.

I try to play it in another player, too, and same situation happens. Any help would be great. My first thought was that the PS3 or DVD player needs the same codec installed to play the audio on the dvd properly--like my computer needed.

If so, is there any way to do that? I don't have my PS3 hooked to the Internet...is there a way to burn a codec to a CD or dvd and have this work? Is it another issue I'm not seeing?

Also, some more info...I used Ulead DVD Movie Factory 6 to burn this DVD. I went in, chose my AVI file, chose not to create a menu, and burned straight to my DL DVD. Should I have made it as a data disc instead? Would the audio have worked then?.

And along with my PS3, I have a Panasonic DMR-EZ485V dvd recorder.

On Amazon's page for the Panasonic DMR-EZ485V, it states it supports DIVX:

* Multi Format playback: DVD, DivX, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, CD, CD-R, CD-RW

What am I doing wrong?

Are you burning a compliant dvd?

That has the specs you need to follow. Choose NTSC since your in the US.

It has to be 48khz for dvd audio. You may be experiencing problems converting if the original audio is vbr (variable bit rate).

If it is already ac3 you shouldn't have any problems if you authored the dvd correctly. Most dvd authoring programs should recognize ac3 with no problems (dolby digital).

You can try the original file on a dvdr with your ps3 or panasonic. However they can more picky on what types of avi files it will play. Even if it really is a divx file there are parameters that it requires before they will play them. That is why you may be better off authoring a correctly spec'd dvd.

You need to be in "dvd video mode" for it to be a normal dvd - unless you already have the authored video_ts folder with the vob files in it - then you can just burn those as data since the video_ts folder with vobs is a dvd - assuming its authored properly of course.

Even if your ps3 is not connected to the net is it connected via lan to your pc? If so you can stream the file to it. You can try to do it wirelessly but video over wifi g isn't perfect (I'm nearly certain the internal wifi of the ps3 is in the normal G speed).

first identify the properties of the big avi. use mediainfo in text mode. paste a screenshot here. you might want to blank out the name of the file.....

you can open the disc you burned and do the same thing. ulead may have converted it to dvd format. did it take a few hours to do? imgburn is a better choice for burning dvds. it doesn't convert anything.

I ended up burning it as a data disc, and it works in my PS3 now. Sound is fine. Don't know why that works, however, lol.
