TV recorded DVDs to VCD/AVI

I've recorded a whole bunch of movies to DVD with my DVD recorder. I want to edit the VOB files to manually remove the adverts and then encode the result to VCD or AVI. What program(s) can I use

Or avidemux, open first main vob, cut away the adverts, save as avi xvid or mpg mpeg1(vcd).
