    Hello all!

I haven't been on the forums for a while; a year to be exact. I would like to thank once again (if they're still present) everyone that aided me in my DVD editing woes last year. I am working on this year's Film Festival with all of the knowledge that I have gained from the one prior, but I have run into an error that is truly puzzling me: ...

I am trying to open a movie in order to remove it's menu because we will not be using the menus for the festival; the directors would like the film to "just play". This is fine, as I am fully aware of how to accomplish this with multiple programs now... the problem that I am having occurs with one of the movies. I can play it with my computer's video player (I'm using VLC), but when I try and open the DVD in a separate, "editing" program, I am faced with many errors...

Upon opening the movie (or trying to at least :P ) in DVD Shrink, it won't even show any .VOB files (or anything for that matter...) and when I try and drag them in manually, it tells me "DVD Shrink has encountered an error and cannot continue. Invalid Filename.) ....

After this, I attempted to rip the movie to my computer to see if it would work using DVD Decrypter. When I initially open up the disc, I am faced with a few "cautions" in the log, namely:

W 19:48:33 Possible Structure Protection Found!
W 19:48:33 1 area has been marked as 'suspect'.
W 19:48:33 Dummy sectors will be inserted where necessary.

I noted these warnings and proceeded to copy the movie to my computer, but was faced with a few more errors. They are listed here in chronological order:

    On-the-fly IFO/BUP file patching failed!

    File Name: VTS_01_0.IFO
    Size: 28, 672 bytes

    Reason: PatchIFO failed.

    ------------------------------------------------------

    and then this one...

    I/O Error!

    Device: [0:3:0] ATAPI DVD DUAL 8X4X12 B3BC (D (ATA)

    ScsiStatus: 0x02
    Interpretation: Check Condition

    CDB: 28 00 00 00 2F A0 00 00 01 00
    Interpretation: Read (10) - Sector: 12192

    Sense Area: 70 00 03 00 00 00 00 12 00 00 00 00 11 00 00 00 00 00 00 01 02 03 04 05
    Interpretation: Unrecovered Read Error

    -------------------------------------------------------

I then clicked my only realistic option "cancel" and went on to try opening the movie in DVDReMake... this one was the least promising. Upon "opening DVD" , the entire program froze up on me during the "recovering cell information" step. I tried again and again, making sure it wasn't a "windows fluke", but was faced with the same frozen screen.

After this, I tried my last option: PgcEdit. This program gave me the most errors, in the most places. I COULD type them all out for everyone to read, but I think that my description is already as verbose as necessary. If they are needed - however - I would be more than happy to list them here for whomever.

If anyone feels up to the challenge of working with me to get to the bottom of this issue, your help and interest will be MUCH appreciated!

    Thanks so much in advance!!!

    Cheers!

It may not help, but try using VOB2MPG and take out the MPEG from the VOB container. Maybe the authoring used is really messed up. Then you could re-author if needed. This shouldn't damage the original MPEG quality.

Or the disc or whatever format the video is on is damaged. Then a bit harder to recover the MPEG.

I will definitely try that in the meantime! I'm not even able to open up the DVD in Windows Explorer and copy any of the DVD files onto my computer. I get a cyclic redundancy error at the same file / spot where all of the other programs were coughing. I will see how well that option works though! Thanks a lot! Any additional information from yourself, or anyone for that matter is greatly appreciated!

    Have a good one!

That's sounding like you have a corrupted or damaged video, or one that the author has messed up. If you have no luck extracting some usable content, you might have to reject it and ask the author to re-submit a file that would work. Giving clear and exact specifications for your required input format might help in the future. But that's not so easy.

Again, I'm just guessing that the file itself is the problem.

I tried converting the VOB's to MPEG with no luck. With VOB2MPG I get the following error message upon opening the DVD:

    Could not get interfaces
DVD-Video playback graph could not be built due to insufficient decoders.

I really hope that it wasn't poor encoding on the DVD to begin with, or something to that effect. This is a movie from Quebec and it's faced professionally and everything... it may have just been a bad disc? :S Is there anything else that I could try?

    Thanks a million!

Maybe the DVD was inadvertently submitted with protection that DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter can't handle. Have you tried ripping it to your computer with DVDFab HD Decrypter?

I have not. I'm not even able to copy the DVD files off of the disc from Windows Explorer. I will give your suggestion a shot though! I'm desperate for a solution at this point as deadlines are fast approaching! Thank you for all the help!

SUCCESS! I opened the DVD up with DVDFab HD Decrypter with no errors whatsoever, and was able to successfully rip the movie to my computer to work on. An extreme THANK YOU goes out to everyone who has given me a slice of their time to offer suggestions! I am extremely grateful that there is such a large collection of knowledgeable people that are ready and willing to help others out!

    Cheers!

It's not really clear if the problem is reading the data, or the data itself.

Try Isopuzzle to copy the entire DVD to your hard disk as an ISO file.
It will tell you if there are any problems reading the DVD and will keep retrying till it gets all the data or you give up.

If the DVD is good it takes no more time than a file copy.

That's great that you were able to transfer it. It's unusual to see encryption on anything but a commercial disc, but at least KBeee came up with a solution.

Looking back at your original post, there were a few clues that some protection scheme might have been involved.

W 19:48:33 Possible Structure Protection Found!
W 19:48:33 1 area has been marked as 'suspect'.
W 19:48:33 Dummy sectors will be inserted where necessary.
    Good luck with your festival.

Thank you very much! I thought that I had gained enough "DVD experience" from last year's festival that I wouldn't have a headache like this. It appears that I was wrong! Either way, I'm so glad that I managed to get to the bottom of it!

Have a great day guys / gals!

    Cheers!
