I recently tried to play a Region 1 enabled DVD on my computer through VLC Media Player and using DVD Region + CSS Free.

This would work up to a point. The Columbia TriStar logo would appear as for the start of the DVD and then when the Menu switched to Title 1 nothing would appear.

I tried this through Windows Movie Player and WinDVD and nothing worked.

    Can anyone help?

  2. Use anydvd or dvdfabhddecrypter instead. Anydvd and dvdfabhddecrtyper are updated all the time to beat the newest protection schemes. Check for the usual suspects - dirty or scratched disc - dirty lens

You could rip it then play it.

If none of that works, return the disc as defective.

As VLC does no region checking of any kind, it should not be necessary to use other products and VLC at the same time. This may be the problem. And naming the DVD in question is always helpful just in case someone knows if there's anything unusual about it.

Columbia is part of Sony and Sony uses non-standard copy protection mechanism like ARCCOS. While these should not be a problem for playback by VLC, again, maybe you are doing too much by also using DVD Region + CSS Free at the same time.

I would NOT expect WinDVD and WMP to work with a region 1 DVD on your UK computer, so that part of it is normal, unfortunately for you.

He could make the drive region to region 1 temporarily or make the drive region free.

Technically, yes, but if you're going to suggest that, then be honest and admit that doing so will use up one of the 5 allowed region changes on the drive.

Easier said than done for a newbie, plus there may not be any region free firmware for the drive. Some drives can be changed and some cannot.

Fortunately AnyDVD worked for the original poster.
