  1. I used to have the auto update set for every day. Now I changed it to once a week. Problem is, during the auto update, it takes about 15 minutes to complete and during that time I can hardly use the computer. I don't understand why it needs to update seemingly so much data, and why the computer slows down so much during the update. Even if I download 200kbps from Rapidshare, the computer still operates normally.

  2. It needs to update daily because new virus signatures are released daily. If you change it to update weekly, then it has to do a weeks worth of updates. That is why it takes you so long. My advice would be to set the update time during a period when you know you are not going to be using your computer. Set it for 2am or something, then you can do whatever you want to do.

Downloading and updating signatures should be pretty painless. But be default McAfee used to then scan all files. Which is likely what is causing your slowness.

I quit using McAfee and Norton long ago because they are resource hogs, even when they aren't doing stupid things like this.

Realtime protection is not stupid. It saves you if you have somehow been infected.

If you have a computer that is not a dinosaur, the scanning is an invisible process, and you hardly notice it.
