a raw file would not have subtitles to begin with and .avi files would have hard subs (meaning they can't get ripped, burned within the video) if it had subs. You can rip subtitles from .mkv, .mp4... if they had subtitles. For mkv's you can use mkvextract and for mp4's, not to sure but, i read yamb and mp4box. And i personally use aegisub to edit subtitles.

Edit: Oh my bad on the avi part then :\

Actually, you can have (soft) subtitle streams in an AVI.

Write subtitle file separately in paragraph wise in notepad and save it.
Use 'DivXLand media subtitler' and open above notepad and movie.
you can now see all your text in 'DivXland ms' and also you can see your movie.
play the movie and click on text when it is match on movies dialogues(Applying the subtitles)(Just click Apply button).
at the end of the movie click 'file-save as'
and save it as .srt file and now finish.

    enjoy.....

    regards,
    Dilan Silva.
