I've searched through the forums here and over at imgburn.com and haven't seen any similar posts, my apologies if I missed something.
So after taking a few years off from DL burning due to the massive number of coasters I was making, I decided to try it again to make a back-up of one of my dvds whose main title was so large that it had to be compressed to 60% to fit on a dvd-r (and this was just the title, none of the menus or anything else, I re-authored it using DVD Shrink to only have the main title, and it was still huge), plus I've got a new Vaio laptop that I picked up in february, so I was hoping to have better results, now that a few years have passed since my initial attempts.
I started here, looking through the guides and forums, and came to the conclusion that I needed to get ImgBurn (I've previously used DVD Decryptor on older machines, so I was somewhat familiar with it), so I went over there and started looking through the guides. I knew I needed to make an ISO to burn to the dvd (that's what I've done in the past for single layer dvds), so I looked through their guides and found this: http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=1777 . I read through it, and realized that, instead of making an ISO from DVD Shrink, I should output it to files instead.
So I loaded the disc in DVD Shrink, turned off all compression, and backed up the disc to output files (dvd_folder/VIDEO_TS). I then followed that guide and used ImgBurn to create an ISO and select the layer break. I went to burn the dvd, selecting the MDS file, and sure enough, right when it got to the layer break, it popped up an error and writing failed.
Here's the log from the start of the burn to the error:

1.Laptop writers are not good(especially Optiarc),get an external writer for burning DL.
2.You're using Ritek DL which isn't very good, use Verbatim. -
And you are ripping these pressed dvd's with what exactly ??
Because if it's dvd shrink, you need to get an UPDATED ripper. -
Ah yes. The infamous "power calibration" error. One possible fix for this to upgrade your burner's firmware, but there's no guarantees that will fix it. Sometimes it does. Better is to ONLY buy Verbatim DVD+R DL discs. If you use any other brand (hint - Ritek) you will post here asking why your burns fail. Looks like you did already

for the record - I'm using "Memorex" dvd+r dl. I use the quotes because, based on the log, they're Ritek dvds.
Oh well. Thanks for the suggestions! -

DVDFab HD Decrypter is free and is updated continuously for newer copy protections on dvd's, dvd shrink has not been updated in years and years for copy protections, although it is still fine for shrinking to SL dvdr's.
Neither has DVD Decrypter & ImgBurn is made by the same person who used to make DVD Decrypter except he does not do decryption anymore (long story).
DVDFab HD Decrypter for ripping & ImgBurn for burning (espc. for DL) -
If it's a newer DVD, DVDFab HD Decrypter is what I would use for the decryption. Then continue with Shrink if you like. At least to get rid of everything but the main movie. Most times it will fit without any 'shrinking'. Then use ImgBurn and Verbatim DL+ discs.
Your 'Power Calibration' error means your burner couldn't do the power calibration. This is done at the beginning of every burn and calibrates the burner's laser to your media. Most likely, your burner doesn't have the correct burning strategy for your media. Changing the media is the easiest thing to do.
If you have the same failure with Verbatim DL, then your burner laser may not have enough power. This is more common with a burner that is wearing out, or has a poor power supply. It's also possible your burner was overheating, but I would think that's a bit unlikely. Burning at a lower speed may help there, but DL is usually fairly low speed anyway. -
- Rip the DVD with DVDFab HD Decrypter, it's free, unless you want to pay for AnyDVD which will work as well.
- Use Verbatim DVD+R DL only. If you have some more of those Memorex's laying around you could test this method with those, since they're really not that great anyways, you have nothing to lose.
- Burn with ImgBurn, build mode. You do NOT need to create an ISO first, I don't understand why people think they have to do so, it' just adds another step to the process. Use this guide:
