I have created another home family dvd with Gui dvd author from multiple converted video files. My problem is odd-jumping video on the final dvd in fast motion scenes, but only on one particular home dvd player. The same disc works fine on pc and other home players. Is this most likely to be due to2high a bitrate being used in conversion with the final vob files, with the specific player not being able to handle all the data? Or does it not work that way? I usually convert my files to the highest possible bitrate for good quality if i dont have much to add to a disc, so i dont have to worry about wasting space. Thanks

What is the bitrate during these scenes ? You should be able to see it in the OSD for the player while playing back.
If it is only affecting one player then it is a good chance this is the cause, if the bitrate is high enough. The spec limit for data is 9800 kbps, with a total video/audio bitrate of 10800 kbps. However some cheaper or older machines can struggle with bitrates above 8500 kbps, and sometimes less.Read my blog here.

thanks for the info. I will have a look when i get hold of my pc and report back, as only on a mobile phone right now. If this is the case with high bitrates, then i am wondering what bitrate is usually used max on average for commercial retail discs with alot of motion, since jumping or skipping will never happen with those? I think with creating my own discs, they are around 9000 max.
Update: just found out the player used by family for my dvd was.. wait for it... a playstation 2! Lol, cheap junk, and not the most compatible. thatll explain most of the problem, i really doubt the ps2 is very versatile with compatibility. Only just plays standard discs if i remember correctly, with sound lagging behind on long movies occasionally, and thats with retail discs. I feel a bit better now! What i have found interesting is that the ps2 i have tried the disc on now myself (i also have one) does not even play the Mp2 menu music, and freezes up for ages before the movie attempts to play. May also be a dvd-r reading problem with the ps2 freezing, as well as being incapable of higher bitrate fast motion sequences -

Nice to here from a 'professional' that it's most likely not my fault

ill recommend people dont ever use a ps2, if it seemingly gives up at high bitrates. I dont think its that keen on dvd-r discs either, as it seems to take ages to get to the menu. I also own a ps2, but havent really tested it much myself with dvd movie playback in general. I think the sound can go slightly out of synch with long length movies. Not that going out of synch isnt a major annoyance!

Is it possible that i could use a program such as dvdshrink to lessen the bitrate to a more acceptable level, even if the current jumping disc on my ps2 already fits onto a single layer dvd-r? No doubt i would lose even more quality, but if its the easy lazy option to make it playable and watchable, could it solve my problem? Or does it not work that way. I have just tried backing up other discs and they seemed to work on the ps2, so thats why im asking. thanks for any info

Yes, it is possible and it could work, but there is (of cause) no guarantee. It may work with one dvd and fail with another.

thanks for the info. I am wondering as to why the shrink method may not work all the time, if i can customise settings? I did a ps2 search on playing movies from dvdr, and it seems some people may well be breaking their systems as a result! Supposedly most ps2s have a very cheap/poor laser. Sony saving money. As a test, instead of my home made digicam created dvds, i have just tried out a backup retail movie of my own. It does not seem to jump at all on the ps2, no problems. Interestingly, my own created family dvds with photos etc that jump, tend to only do so at the start or throughout menus. I think i added audio at 320kbps stereo. I thought all players could cope with this, as part of the menu i think the value was around 8000 or so
