    Evening All,

Wondering if someone can point me in the direction of a how to guide, or provide some pointers for trimming an MPEG I have which won't fit onto a DVD. I have transferred a recording off my PVR and run it through MPEG Stream Clip to get an MPEG file, but it is 2hrs 12 mins long so won't fit on the DVD. I canquite happily trim stuff off the start of the recording to get it to fit, but not sure how. AVsToDVD doesn't seem to do it and Windows Movie Maker won't load the MPEG (complains about needing a codec downloading).

I don't need something terribly complicated and powerful, just some basic editting functions.

    Any hints?

    Thanks,
    Al.

Streamclip will perform simple edits just fine. Trim at keyframe boundaries to avoid trouble (esp. with sync).

You will need the MPEG2 component from Apple to do this, unlike the conversion from .ts to .mpg.

TMPGenc will also do this, but you again need the payware version.

I'm sure others will chime in with their suggestions shortly.

You can trim with MPEG Stream Clip. But a two hour movie will fit on a DVD. Or a eight hour movie. It all depends on the bitrate used. But you probably don't want to re-encode and you are stuck with the size/bitrate your PVR used.

Its length has nothing to do with whether or not it'll fit on a DVD. Yes, many DVDRs say they have a 2 hour limit, but that's nonsense. The only thing that might prevent you from burning to a DVDR is if the filesize is greater than 4.37GB. DVD Shrink won't work unless it's already in DVD format (VOBs, IFOs, BUPs). However, ReJig can transcode MPG files to a smaller size.

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone! It occurred to me after I posted my question, that I could trim the program on my PVR before uploading it to the PC and do it that way. Might be simpler and would do the trick in this instance. Note to self - think before asking questions

I've had great luck with Mpg2Cut2 located at http://www.geocities.com/rocketjet4/. It's easy to get the hang of and super fast once you do. Cuts and combines Mpeg2 files without a hassle. Just download the zip with the program and the zip with the dlls.

Unzip the program and its already there as a usable .exe file. Then unzip the dlls and copy into the Windows System folder. Easy as that, now you are able to cut Mpeg2 files for free!
