After ripping dvd to vcd the audio is very quiet. Should I use the nomalise option in dvd2avi? Will this increase the volume or just make the entire movie the same volume?

What software are you using to encode? Personally I encode my audio and video separately and use bbMPEG to mux. This way i can use the best tools (beSweet currently) for getting the best audio quality.
If your using TMPGenc to load the wav file that DVD2AVI makes, goto the Audio options and click the normalize options there, or you could try the normalize option in DVD2AVI. Personally, I would just use BeSweet :)
