I am trying to convert .asf video from Panasonic DVD recorder to Mac OSX compatible .avi format. When I try to convert, I get the following message in the progress info box:

FYI, I am able to convert to .mov format.

    Thanks

Apparently you are using a much older and/or custom version of mencoder, which may not be 100% compatible with the ffmpegX 0.0.9. Any special reason why you're not updated?

Thanks for your help. No particular reason except that I had not actually used ffmpegx since, I think, 2004 but had probably installed an update to it but not updated binaries at some time. I had the x version installed and was having the same problem, so I installed the y version which said that I didn't need to reinstall the binaries. Clear as mud?

Anyway, I reinstalled the binaries and now it works except I get no sound. I did notice that the binary mpeg2enc.intel is shown as a document whereas the old mpeg2enc was a text document if that matters. The process information file says that it doesn't find audio stream:

Maybe you are playing a non-interleaved stream/file or the codec failed?

If mencoder can't find an audio stream, then these ASF files should be converted with presets that do not use mencoder.
To convert to AVI, you could try the DivX ffmpeg and XviD ffmpeg presets.

Both of those presets worked. Thanks for helping a newby boobie. Now, my new MacBook Pro just arrived and I'm hoping everything works when I make the big transfer.
