I am trying to convert .asf video from Panasonic DVD recorder to Mac OSX compatible .avi format. When I try to convert, I get the following message in the progress info box:

FYI, I am able to convert to .mov format.
Thanks

Apparently you are using a much older and/or custom version of mencoder, which may not be 100% compatible with the ffmpegX 0.0.9. Any special reason why you're not updated?

Thanks for your help. No particular reason except that I had not actually used ffmpegx since, I think, 2004 but had probably installed an update to it but not updated binaries at some time. I had the x version installed and was having the same problem, so I installed the y version which said that I didn't need to reinstall the binaries. Clear as mud?
Anyway, I reinstalled the binaries and now it works except I get no sound. I did notice that the binary mpeg2enc.intel is shown as a document whereas the old mpeg2enc was a text document if that matters. The process information file says that it doesn't find audio stream:

Maybe you are playing a non-interleaved stream/file or the codec failed?
For AVI files, try to force non-interleaved mode with the -ni option.
