I have a widescreen monitor and play games in widescreen. When I record a game I'm playing in FRAPS, and then encode it with Xvid, it always puts some coloured vertical lines down the middle of the left side, and some colours are messed up like a deep red might look light pink.
It only looks like this when played back in VLC media player! When I play it in Windows Media Player the video looks fine. If I letterbox the video to a 4:3 resolution with black bars at the top and bottom, then encode it with Xvid, it's also fine.
What's going on?

Use Mod 4 frame sizes. That is, the frame width and height should each be even multiples of 4. Even better, use Mod 16 sizes because Xvid works internally with 16x16 blocks. So 638x480 isn't good because 638 isn't an even multiple of 4. 636x480 should be ok (no visual problems). 640x480 will give even better efficiency of compression and decompression.
