Hi
I add subtitles to my divx files with AVIAddXSubs so I can see the subtitles on my dvd player when I play the movie on the tv. So I finally got one video file with .divx extension.
But I don't know what to do to see the subtitles when I play those files on the computer.
Does anybody knows?
Thanks

Hi,
Use DivX player, that will work.

Thanks, but that player comes with so much garbage I don't need and it also replaces the codecs I have already installed. Is there another choice?

Change the .divx extension to .avi and it should work the same as other AVI type files. .divx uses a proprietary format for menus, etc., but I don't know how it handles subs. But to play back .divx files with their special features, you would likely need a Divx ultra certified player.
But I would just rename the extension, then subs should work properly. BTW, .srt subs are separate from the video file, just in the same folder and named the same. Not sure what format of subs you are using.
And welcome to our forums. -
sorry redwudz, but this has nothing to do with the extension name, you need a player that can handle Xsub format. The only one I know is DivX Player.
Renzord I understand your point about replacing the codecs, I belive you can custom install only the player.

if you keep the original subtitles, I mean srt ou sub/idx, of course you should be able to view them with any player, for instance with VLC player, it will open your DivX file with a warning message (related to the Xsub streams) but then will handle your file properly.
hope this helps -

That way most of the standalone players *and* computer players will be able to read them both (because .SRT subtitles and .AVI videos - if 'proper' codecs used to create video - are playable on any standalone players capable of MPEG-4 playback and on a computers, regardless of stupid Divx Networks certification).
That way you also can have many different subtitles for the same video file (i.e. ENglish, ENglish for hearing impaired, and Commentary Track subtitles... not to mention same in all other languages) and they will be easily selectable on both standalone players and computer players.
Doing it "divx way" you limit yourself to their proprietary computer software player and their proprietary "Divx Certification" which only handful of standalone players have (manufacturers are not stupid to pay extra for something useless).
If you want to have broadest possible compatibility, do 1 extra step: use i.e. SRT Converter or Subtitle Workshop to "convert" the .txt subtitles into .srt subtitles (it is not really any 'conversion' but mere reformatting of the text file to have the subtitles' timing in a format readable by all standalone players capable of MPEG-4 (aka "divx") playback).
And install latest ffdshow filter (aka codec) on your computer to enable playback of almost *any* video formats and subtitle formats with almost any player you have there on your computer (including WMP), there is no need to install 20 different players for each and every different "divx" format... -
