  1. I want to use VirtualDub to convert a 4:3 letterboxed MPG file to a 700MB or thereabouts DIVX AVI. I've already demuxed the audio and video and have created an avs file with the cropping, deinterlacing, and fps instructions. I was just looking through the options in the Divx codec through VirtualDub's configurations and I see that there is a cropping utility there as well. I just wanted to know if I would get faster conversion results if I imported the video as an avs "pre-cropped" (I add the mp3 of the audio using "audio from other file") or to crop with DivX's configurations? I'm thinking its the former but I thought I'd ask.

As a general rule, processing through avisynth is faster than processing through virtualdub unless using only virtualdub filters and therefore working in RGB space. That said, the overhead of cropping is so low that the difference will probably be minimal ( < 5%). If you are working with avisynth specific versions of virtualdub filters for things like noise reduction and deinterlacing you can see savings of 20 - 30%, and sometimes orders of magnitude difference.

Do it in the AviSynth AVS script.
