I have a Canon HF 100 camera and i bought a DVD burner for it from Canon. It uses basic DVD-R DLs..
However, if i want to rip the video back in the future for editing, is that possible? And can i then just rip it to anything or will it still be AVCHD/m2ts files? And how would this be even done?
I figured i'd use it for backuping and later editing purpose, but then i realised i haven't even thought that there might be problems, before my woman said it today.

When you say dvdr do you mean for data or as an actual dvd video disc? If its data then its possible the original files are intact for direct copying.
However if they were authored as a video dvd than they were altered to fit the dvd specifications. In that case your best bet is to use dvd decrypter and rip it into a single vob file (you can set file splitting to none to get a single file). Then if you prefer you can use vob2mpg to get a mpg other programs can edit. Or a lot of programs can read vob files directly.
Since you mention m2ts I assume your camera is a high def camera since that is bluray material. As far as that I am uncertain how to retrieve the files if you made a dvd. They would have been converted and lost.
However I don't have a high def camera so I can't comment specifically on your model.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
The Canon DVD burner burns actual DVD video discs.
So what i really should have gotten, was a separate DVD burner for my laptop which has an SDHC card slot, and this way i could make these data DVDs..
Oh my.
Someone please confirm what yoda said? -
yoda313 - You forget that when a DVD blank is burned as a data disc that it can contain anything. I have DVD+R DL discs that contain HD DVD format video (yes, I foolishly bought an HD DVD player right after New Year's Day) and they play fine in my Toshiba DVD player. The problem is that v1ru5 doesn't know enough to tell us accurately what he/she burned. I believe that this person has not burned DVD format video but something else.
v1ru5 - Put one of these discs that you burned in a PC and tell us the name of each folder and the name of each file in each folder on the disc. We can figure out what you have from that and provide better advice. I suspect that what you actually have is BluRay format on DVD-R DL discs and if I'm right, yoda313's suggestions won't work for you. -
Can you open the .m2ts files on the DVD-R DL media? If so then drag and drop to HDD and convert..

Sorry, my bad! the link is for .mts, some good reading though...
However you should be able to use DGAVCdec to open your .m2ts files" Who needs Google, my wife knows everything" -
My computers DVD drive is unable to read the disc(s).
The burners manual says that it burns the disks in AVCHD format.
So game over for me?? Because the trip is closing in - I need some way to dish out my video off the memory cards! Only next week here anymore and then we're leaving, so if i'd need to order something, i'd have to do it NOW, with express delivery.
Thanks for the replies, keep them coming, preferably fast -

AVCHD format makes video files which have an extension of; .m2ts
My computer can see the files from the camera, sure, and even play them with the ImageMixer 3 software supplied.
But if i burn the files to a disc using the Canon DW-100 burner, i get a video disc that can be played ONLY with the burner + camera attached. This cannot be read in either of my computers' DVD drives - or a regular DVD player for TV. I figure the drives should support AVCHD to be able to read the discs or something, because the discs show fine video otherwise (if linked to the TV with the burner and camera attached)..
Anyhow, i'm thinking about going the portable harddisk way for backing up. Much easier. -
Can you drag and drop the .m2ts file to your HDD? I'm guessing you can,so once on your HDD you can convert it to other formats....use tsmuxer to extract its contents...
You can also try by changing the file extension from .m2ts to .MTS and use the guide I posted above..try it! what do you have to lose, you still have the original....

Apparently there is a way to burn a standard dvd and finalizing it. Try burning standard instead of HD.
"The DW-100 is compatible with the Canon VIXIA HG10, VIXIA HF10, VIXIA HF100 high definition camcorders as well as the Canon FS11, FS10 and FS100 standard definition camcorders.
It will create AVCHD as well as Standard Definition DVDs which will play in compatible disc players. In addition, you may use your AVCHD camcorder along with the DW-100 to play back AVCHD discs which have been created in the DW-100 on an HDTV monitor. Just connect the burner to your VIXIA HG10, VIXIA HF10 or VIXIA HF100 camcorder and use the HDMI or Component terminal on the camcorder to connect with the HDTV to view the content of the disc.
When finalizing AVCHD or Standard Definition video from your camcorder, the DW-100 can also create a menu screen for use when performing this operation"
