I need to take footage off of a DVD, edit it in Final Cut Express, and then put it back on a new DVD. It has to be extremely high quality looking footage at the end. This will all be done on a Mac with Tiger. I have tried ripping with Handbrake but the rip always looks a little funky and wavy when there is lots of movement on screen. I know very little about what file formats work with what programs, but any help you can give me is much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

What will the MPEG2 codec do for me? I tried to do a little research and read a bunch of people saying VLC, which I have, does something similar for free. Is that true?

Also, after I edit the project, what should I export the finished product as to burn?

Also, just to make things a little more complicated, my computer doesn't have a DVD burner on it. I will be putting the finished file onto a flash drive and burning it from a PC. The burning software the PC has sucks and I've read a lot about ImgBurn. How exactly does that work? How would I get a DV or MP4 or whatever file I end up with into it? Thanks so much, sorry for the n00bness

MPEG Streamclip relies on QuickTime to read the VOBs, and QuickTime needs the MPEG-2 playback component to understand files with MPEG-2 video.

A DVD compliant VIDEO_TS folder or an ISO compatible DVD disk image file.

Case, thanks for your reply. I don't see the Video_TS folder or ISO as an export option in FCE. Should I export as DV and then save it as a disk image? Or is there something simpler that I'm not seeing?

You need to get the footage from FCE's native format (DV) to MPEG-2 again. Most people use iDVD, DVD Studio Pro of Roxio Toast for this.

Yes,Case is right. The workflow is to edit the footage (DV Stream)
that you imported in, and then either export it out to iDVD ( free on most macs),
export it out as a Quicktime .mov file from FCE, or "roundtrip" if you had
Final Cut Studio and just export from FCP to Compressor and then author
to disc in Toast or DVD Studio Pro.

Your options at this point: Export from FCE as a QT Movie file,
copy to flash drive, and then take it to a PC with Nero Ultra or
Easy CD/DVD creator to make your DVD, or to another mac with iDVD on it.
be warned though: compressing to Mpeg-2 will take time, usually real time
( length of the video to be compressed0 or greater, as processor speed affects
    compression greatly.

(1.) use Mac The Ripper to clone the DVD to your hard drive. (Version 2.6.6 is free and should work. Latest version is 4.0)
(2.) use MPEG Streamclip to select the footage you want from the DVD and convert it to a MOV for use in FC_Express.
**MPEG STREAMCLIP comes with a detailed help.
(3.) Edit in FCE and export as a MOV file.
*** Unless you have the Quicktime MPEG2 Playback component previously mention by Case.
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
Then you should be able to export an MPEG2 file directly from FC Express.
(4.) use iDVD to convert the MOV file into a DVD.

There are a few ways to do the above. This one just uses software that you should alreay have, or that is free.
let us know how it goes.
