  1. Hello,

I've made 6 concert DVD's of my group and now I want to make a "Best Of" compilation DVD. Is there an easy way to extract specific songs from each disc (they're all chaptered) and recompile them into a new DVD? I have Adobe Premiere Pro and Encore CS3. Can I use these programs or do I need something else?

    Big thanks!

I would use dvd shrink(free) to rip out the clips to vob(in the reauthoring mode) and try import in encore cs3. Or use videoredo to cut out clips from the dvds and import in encore.

My suggestion is to use Virtualdub-MPEG2 to turn VOB files into DV-AVI files for editing in Premiere. Also make sure you have a DV codec on your system. Cedocida DV codec is universally the best one, although Panasonic DV codec is just fine for NTSC. (Load only 1 DV codec!) You will need to also download AC3ACM and install it in the VirtualDub folder to add the ability to turn AC3 audio into .wav file. (VirtualDub, Cedocida & Panasonic DV Codecs, and AC3ACM are all freeware.) It might also be a good idea to get another freeware program, VOBMerge to link each DVD's VOB files into single VOBs, because VirtualDub sometimes leaves a gap when going from one VOB to the next.

Open the VOB in VirtualDub, and select the section of video you want. Go to Video > Compression > and select your DV codec (Cedocida or Panasonic). Also use Video > Fast Recompress. If your audio is AC3, you must use Audio > Full Processing Mode to change it to 48kHz, 16-bit Stereo .wav. (Disregard if your source audio is already .wav.)

After VirtualDub does all your conversions, import the files into Premiere, edit, export to MPEG-2, and author your final DVD with Encore, saving your DVD program to a harddrive folder that you can burn your discs from.

    Best of luck.

Edit: As I was composing this, Baldrick offered his suggestion. See, you have lots of alternatives. With so much free or trial software, you have the option to see what works best for you.

  4. Thanks for the tips guys. I'll try them tonight. One thing though, I already have DVD Decrypter installed. Would it be possible to rip the chapters with DVD Decrypter instead of DVD Shrink?
